171076 2003-08-27 23:07:00 Ok, I have downloaded and tried some answering machine software on my home PC (from www.download.com - there's heaps of em), but can't seem to get any of them to work? i.e. every time I do a 'test ring' I always get an engaged signal.

Am I trying the impossible? I mean is it possible to use this software with a 56k dial-up modem? Any ideas? Has anyone ever used this type of software?

Also we have call waiting, could this be affecting it?

>every time I do a 'test ring' I always get an engaged signal

Are you phoning in on another line to see if the PC will answer? If so, how come its engaged, thats my worry .

Is your modem internal PCI or external hardware type . It certainly works with external hardware modems, they usually come with the software . I am not certain that all PCI modems will work .

171078 2003-08-28 03:48:00 It's a PCI and yea I was using my cell to ring my home line. I don't understand the engaged signal either? (considering the call waiting, maybe we don't have that service any more, i'll have to ask) promethius (1998)
171079 2003-08-28 04:11:00 The engaged signal suggests that the modem had already picked the line up before you rang in.

Telephone answering software should react to a ringing phone after (x) rings, and only then pick the line up.
