Have you thought about approaching your local deaf society they may have some ideas that may help

171231 2003-08-28 22:14:00 Why not talk to the Pastor himself and explain the situation? There may be someone he knows in the congregation who can sign and could help you. Or he may have other ideas that could help.

Besides, if they truly are a "welcome to all" type of church they should be only too glad to try and help you find a solution to keep you coming along.

171232 2003-08-28 23:53:00 I'm sitting here with the stereo blasting away. Have you ever experienced music or have you always had a hearing threashold of 110db (or whatever). Dolby Digital (160)
171233 2003-08-29 00:02:00 i'm deaf and i just cant hear anything but it doesnt mean i cannot feel...
u would hear a car coming as it was just down the road a little...right until it passes u...
me...i wouldnt know there was a car coming till it was right in front of me...but if i wasnt looking, i would know there was a car or truck coming by feeling it....
so with experiencing music...i only feel it, but words/lyrics are gone..just the drums etc i can feel..
so basically everything i "should be hearing" instead is i am feeling...
i completely cant hear anyone talking at all....

but i can if i wear hearing aids...just not everything, if i wear hearingaids i'd hear people talking and understand more ONLY if they are looking at me...so dont think they be useful at church with them looking at me only when theres 200 ppl there to be loooked at too...but eitherway with hearing aids, i still wouldnt hear lyrics/words from music....

and if anyone wants to ask me questions like dolby has..just ask :) i dont mind,

Even though you said you don't mind, sorry if I just crossed some line. I am interested thats all. I have a deaf niece although she is 400 miles away and we don't see much of her (so I haven't learn't sign language).

This is sort of unrelated but I was reading about a browser called Lynx which is purely text, no graphics, and with some other mechanism it could convert text to speech for blind people. You, of course, need it the other way and of course, people, all speak differently so to get an accurate speech to text, say running on a pda with a microphone would be difficult at this point. I'm sure someone, somewhere is trying it.

171235 2003-08-29 01:12:00 You can basically turn to any helping community trust for this though, I'm sure they will help, maybe require fundraising too to help them out but I'm positive they will be willing to help. Who knows they will probably get the person to wear their shirt and look for donations too. Just write formal letters to these people telling them of the situation, maybe do volunteer work.

How many people attend this church, (just a rough estimate). You could turn to those big companies and they may pay for it, although it would have to be consultanted through the church as the company may decide to have the sign person wear a t-shirt advertising the company, that way the people benefit and the company benefit. Still would need to look at if this is going to offend people as the company doesn't want people being offended, they'll just have to make sure that the people who attend the church understand why the sign person is wearing the company shirt.

171236 2003-08-29 03:09:00 Captioning is expensive ... skilled people (or not so skilled) do it for TV.

Many churches and other public places have inductive loops wired into the sound systems, so that suitable hearing aids can receive the sound. Churches sometimes have radio amateur members who have enough clues to do the installation.

171237 2003-08-29 06:21:00 Chris,
Does Rotorua have a Deaf Association branch? if they do, then hire interpreters through them, and you shouldnt have to pay for it? I know of some Deaf people down there, but am not sure if they go to church, and if they do, im not sure how they overcome this problem .

As people are asking about music - Same as chris said, we feel the music, and maybe some ppl hear it a little bit . I go for techno/dance music most of the time, since I'm not 'listening' to music for the words, im listening to it for the beat, bass etc . Some of you might not want to take a car ride with me! Because i have the stereo system playing music really loud, so i can feel the beat, while driving :) (as while the car is stationary, its easy to feel it, but while you're driving -especially on open road, doin 100kph - its harder to feel)

171238 2003-08-29 10:00:00 hey Chris,
I am a qualified NZSL Interpreter .
I do cover the Rotorua area when required but I come from Hamilton and apart from the cost of the service there is also travel as well . If funding was available from HFA/Govt then the cost could be met but the real problem would be availability . In Hamilton there are only 3 qualified interpreters that cover from the Bombays to Taupo and coast to coast .

My suggestion would be to get in contact with Deaf Association Tauranga branch, they're on email . They can put you in contact with NZSL classes that are held in Rotorua . If someone there is interested they may be able to encourage someone to work as a "communicator" for you on a voluntary basis (someone that has a religious interest) . Therefore the benefits would be twofold . You get someone that could at least keep you up with the 'general' topic (dont expect quality as they will be still learning) the 'communicator' would be able to practice their skills .

This would to be honest be a tall order but I have heard this scenario has happened in other centres . A few of the interpreters that I know actually started their interpreting careers this way . The other scenario would be if an announcement was made via the church then maybe someone in your congregation may have always thought of learning NZSL so point them in the direction of the classes to see if they're interested .

good luck
