171373 2003-08-29 02:15:00 B. KDE 3.1.3-0 :D Jen C (20)
171374 2003-08-29 02:53:00 The one I like has a black screen with a prompt. It's fast, uses virtually no memory, and does what it's told.

All GUI's are a complicated way of slowing down all users to the same slow working rate. I think they're part of the deal between MS and Intel to ensure that people need to upgrade their processors, so Linux shouldn't take part. :D They add so much code that they make a reliable OS buggy. What they do to an unreliable DOS shell like Windows is obvious to all.

So there. ]:)

171375 2003-08-29 03:26:00 Try the lastest versions of both A & B and see which one you like. I'm mainly KDE myself, but using gnome ATM.

If they seem too bloated, C would be WindowMaker, rox, or BlackBox.

171376 2003-08-29 04:01:00 If one installed RedHat and chose Gnome as the GUI, how does one change to KDE or something else afterwards? I am sure it is very simple to do but half an hour's searching has turned nothing up so far. dudess_on_a_mish (4468)
171377 2003-08-29 04:15:00 I take it you choose to install KDE as well as the default Gnome GUI? If not, you can install KDE by going KMenu > System Settings > Add/Remove applications.

To switch to KDE, simple kill X by going logout or CTR-ALT-Backspace and then at the Welcome login screen you will see at the bottom a Session icon. Click on this and pick KDE from the menu.

There are other ways of starting KDE, but this is the more newbie friendly method. :)

171379 2003-08-29 06:42:00 Graham,

Is it possible to run more than one gui on the one box at the same time e.g. ctrl-alt-F7 for one ctrl-alt-F8 for the next one. I presume with the X-windows architecture it is in theory possible.

Ok the box might not run that well...

171380 2003-08-29 06:48:00 Windows on Linux..?

Interesting.

171381 2003-08-29 07:52:00 I'm one for the latest KDE.. Allows multiple X-Sessions without a worry, but in saying that, I'm like Graham L, and default to the CLI only ;-)

Bit hard trying to use GAIM without a GUI ;-)

KDE 3.1.3

Just download all the relevant rpm's (or source if you wish), and you should be peachy.

If you like I'll send you a specific download location for whatever distro your using!

Cheers

Chill.
