2003-08-29 00:38:00 | This came through about two minutes after I signed in this morning on Gaim, which is not compatible (yet) with MSN's v8 or v9 authentication protocol (AKA, They thought I was on version 4.x or lower): (11:07:53) messenger@microsoft.com: You are running a version of messenger that requires an immediate security update. Please visit messenger.msn.com to complete the update. (11:07:53) messenger@microsoft.com has closed the conversation window. So, Its good to know that microsoft at least use their own tools to communicate to their users.. This is just another word of warning for anybody out there who may not already be using MSN 5 or 6, that you need to upgrade before the 15th! Cheers Chill.

2003-08-29 00:56:00 | Hmm.. I suppose I should add this: Trillian, Gaim, Easy message, Miranda, and most other supporting applications will be affected, so expect a message when you sign in after a few minutes :-) I'm glad I converted half my MSN contacts to ICQ a month or two back.. ;-)

2003-08-29 01:09:00 | I am also getting the same message when I sign it to other hotmail account (I have two ;)) using MSN messenger 2.2(2.2.1050) ;) | stu140103 (137) | |
2003-08-29 01:20:00 | The reason those programs are affected is because the programmers who made those programs just disassembled the protocol that was being used at the time, no doubt they are working on the newer protocols and you should expect updates just before the change over, well hopefully if they finish it in time, but they won't be stopped. They probably don't update the protocol if they find it still works with newer versions as it takes a while to create the protocol used for communications, so they keep with the one that does work, and would only fix it up if problems were reported with it. Yahoo did the same with their chat and IM and it was just a matter of time when third party clients were being released to work with their protocol.

2003-08-29 02:30:00 | Try amsn it will still work after the change because using v7 of the protocol while microsoft are abandoning v5. amsn.sourceforge.net. Only does windows messenger though. You'll still get be nagged by microsoft to update though since it isn't the latest protocol version which is v8 but it will still work after the 15th.

2003-09-01 05:09:00 | Just digging up an old thread... AMSN still gets that message. And, iirc, MS are ditching the V7 protocol for their newer V8 and 9 protocols! /me is now also a Jabber convert and is thinking of using the Transports to communicate via MSN, provided it still works after the 15th. Is there any other doze or (more prefferably) linux app out there that users arent getting the warning on? I get it on GAIM, AMSN, Kmess.. but not Jabber?!
