171326 2003-08-29 00:28:00 hi,i have a couple questions and im told this is a good place for getting help. :D

Basicly im looking to set up a wireless network as cheaply as possible and i was wondering if 2 cards such as this-

www.computermedic.co.nz

-would be able to comunicate peer-to-peer to each other,or would i need a normal lan card in 1 system feeding into a wireless bridge and a wireless lan card in the seconday machine?

Thanks in advance.

171327 2003-08-29 00:35:00 You should be fine with just two cards like that to run a WLAN... I'd suggest however contacting that supplier and asking them if they have tried it, as I have heard that some WLAN cards require an access point, even for peer-to-peer?! Chilling_Silently (228)

Still doesn't confirm it it will work in ad-hoc network mode though.

Assuming it does, do not expect a huge range. Think 20 metres or so. I use a full WAP and get 30 - 40 metres thru wooden walls.

171330 2003-08-29 06:08:00 I thought all wireless cards could do were to access a wireless access point? I didn't know they could do it peer to peer??

171332 2003-08-29 13:03:00 I have never used P2P, only WAP My Belkin card supports Ad Hoc (P2P)

My setup transfers at average 5 MB, plenty for me. The card is 54G ready, but my wired network is only 10 MB. Thats still faster than I need.

171333 2003-08-30 03:51:00 You could try Ethernet Mains Network Adaptor (XH6774) from Dick Smith.
Phonex broadband. Uses the electric wires as your cable. So you can plug in anywhere in a house. No need to worry about walls etc. I have a couple set up and they work perfectly. David

171334 2003-08-31 07:07:00 Thanks for the replies, I’ve been reading up as many pages as i could find about the situation and it appears some can support peer to peer and some don’t, Unfortunately, no site appeared to go into any great depth about it.

I think i may contact the site with the product and ask them.

Thanks again.

171335 2003-09-05 01:08:00 Just an update.

I contacted the site and was told that they could indeed operate peer-to-peer and have since purchased the pci card i asked about and the laptop card they have on offer.

And im happy to say it works very well.
