I must firstly say a big thanks to Mike at Dr Floppys for talking me through my modem setup troubles. Well done guys :) I had almost given up on Linux, is it always this slow????

Now some questios for you all...
How do I set the modem to connect when requied, mail & mozilla likewise to disconnect when these are closed.
Can we see modem activity in the task bar?

Thanks for now......

171593 2003-08-29 11:02:00 As far as I know you cannot easily get your applications to connect to the internet. To do this you will have to set up "dial on demand".

Using GNOME, try right clicking on your panel (task bar) and choosing add to panel-> internet -> modem lights.

Did that... it now dials my isp but doesn't show any activity, any ideas?
So how do I set dial on command?

Thanks Dave

171595 2003-08-30 02:13:00 I am glad you asked these questions DaveNZ because I have been looking for the answers to them also. There is quite a lot to learn, isn't there? :-)

Assuming your running gnome (default on rh9), right click on the panel, goto add to panel -> internet -> modem lights.

171597 2003-08-30 08:53:00 Dial on demand - (DOD) - I have not tried this on a standalone PC but it should work I think . This is what I did on a Redhat 7 . 0 server acting as a gateway for Windows PCs so that DOD happens when any internet application is started on the Windows PCs .

See . davidpashley . com/tutorials/wvdial-pppd-dod . html" target="_blank">www . davidpashley . com

The summary of this is:

copy your /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial file to a new file called dod .
Modify the file to look like:

noauth
name wvdial
connect "/usr/bin/wvdial --chat xtra"
/dev/ttyS0
115200
modem
crtscts
defaultroute
usehostname
user your . user . name@YourISP . co . nz
noipdefault
idle 180
persist
demand
logfd 6

the idle 180 means that the link will persist for 3 minutes after the last packet of traffic . This may need to be lengthened .

Add pppd call dod to the /etc/rc . d/rc . local file to make the demand dialling active .

pppd call dod

Good luck
John
