171589 2003-08-29 07:07:00 Hi all, could i please have some feedback on modems, as i have a friend who is thinking of buying a cheap second hand computer, however there is no modem or soundcard - the system looks o.k for what it is and has a limited warranty, but money has been the deceiding factor for them....
Anyway they have asked me to sort the soundcard and modem if they indeed go ahead -
My main questions are these and i know its been covered before.....;-)
Which way to go:

1. Internal or external modem??? why?

2. usb modems - feedback on reliability etc... appreciated?
and do people feel they are any better or worse? As i do seem to remember that people have had probs with usb modems causing probs with other usb ports on f1?

Thanks in advance :-)

Specs of computer in case they are needed:

Pentium II 350Mhz
128Mb Ram
4GB Disk
2 x USB Ports, Parallel and Serial Ports
CD Rom
Lan Card 10Mb
Windows 98

If they can afford an external serial modem (NOT USB), it will be better, but the 350 MHz is just grunty enough to use an internal Winmodem.

Don't do it. They are just a Winmodem with added overhead of USB interface.

Winmodems are OK as long as they work. If they give trouble, they are a pain to get right. They depend on all the PC software and hardware playing together nicely to allow them to work.

Cheers G.F
