I have an HP DeskJet 970 printer and Win xp pro on a laptop.

I originally had the printer connected by serial cable and then wanted to change to USB. I had a lot of trouble getting it to work but after many attempts, fluked it to run ok.

However, now every time I turn the laptop on, I get:

1. message on the Task Bar saying "found new hardware". Close that.
2. message from the 'Found New Hardware Wizard' saying "Cannot install this hardware - HP970 printer. There was a problem installing this hardware - specified port is unknown". Close that.
3. another Task Bar message saying "found new hardware - problem occurred during installation - may not work correctly".

Thing is, the printer does work fine. I've looked under Printers in Control Panel and there is a check mark next to usb port.

I would appreciate any advice on how I can get rid of these messages, given that the printer is otherwise ok.

There is a set order for doing the install, and if it's done out of sequence it keeps getting confused.
