| 171505 | 2003-08-31 08:26:00 | It is possible to change ME so it boots into Dos first, but the drives go into unprotected mode and it takes forever to boot. ME will handle most DOS programs, or you can use the start up floppy. I have a small partition with the Dos part of Windows 98 on it, together with Partition Magic, Boot Magic, Xdos, Norton Ghost etc. |

| 171506 | 2003-08-31 08:54:00 | I have ME. Twice I have created a boot up disk following the instructions in FAQ9b by Susan - but on neither occasion has the result managed to get me into DOS ! I have also tried another floppy in case the first was faulty but no joy. Sequence has been - Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/ Remove programs > Start up Disk> Create Disk Is there something more fundamentally wrong with the way I am approaching it perhaps ? [though I am very careful]. ?:| |

If your floppy drive does not have a boot priority above the HDD, then no floppy disk will boot the system . The boot sequence is set under the BIOS . If the floppy is being accessed in the boot sequence, and the floppy disk does not contain a valid set of boot files, the an error message will be seen, and the boot process will be halted until the disk is removed or replaced with a valid boot disk . What happens in your case? |

If your floppy drive does not have a boot priority above the HDD, then no floppy disk will boot the system . The boot sequence is set under the BIOS . Should I have changed the settings ? Is so, how please ? Go in to the area by pressing the key when the machine is booting up presumably ? The boot process was not stopped, despite the floppy being firmly in the drive . It just went ahead as normal . What is on the floppy looks impressive - there are 24 files starting with ASPI2DOS . That is correct - press the Delete key when the message to go into the BIOS comes up . Once in the BIOS find the setting that allows you to change the boot order - change this to enable the floppy drive to be first . Remember not to touch anything else in the BIOS . |

You will need to push DEL(most likely) key when you see a message similar to "push DEL to enter setup". It will flash past quite fast so just keep tapping it. This will take you into BIOS (CMOS). You will need to look for the option for boot loading and make sure the order is set to: 1 Floppy 2 CD-ROM 3 Hard drive Don't forget to save changes when you exit. Lets us know how you get on. |

| 171511 | 2003-09-01 08:32:00 | Hi Jen I followed faithfully what you had said and got the C:\ WINDOWS prompt, then followed Susan's FAQ re smartdrv and deltree tempor~1 etc but no go. I got the "Bad Command" each thing I tried. She says it is either because either the files are not in these locations or it is due to the lack of "true dOS" within Win ME. Maybe I should try Spider again. When I tried it did not clear everything out even on the 5th, 6th etc tries. Mind you I only chose the option re cleaning Windows. Perhaps should be more stout hearted and try the clean the whole hard disc option ? Misty |

| 171512 | 2003-09-02 02:22:00 | Are you trying to get rid of your index.dat files from Internet explorer,Misty? Found that Spider won't delete mine.It shows them ok. I use Window Washer 4.8,only set on IE6,with the only options picked being Cache,History etc,and Bleach locked( index dat) files.If you download the trial version,I've been installing it ,doing the job,then uninstalling it till needed again!But I wouldn't myself pick other options in WW.I think it deleted my System Restore points one time! With WW set on Index files only,it doesn't remove them.Running ME as well. | Neil McC (178) | ||
