172074 2003-09-01 00:39:00 Need some guidance, wife's computer often fails to load and stops anywhere in the boot process both before the Win splash screen and after. It seems to be mainly after the comp is switched off for some hours, but it really can happen anytime. When it does boot OK it seems to me to take a long time to get the system up and running.

The Computer, Tyan Trinity S2380 motherboard, Intel slot A (?) AMD Athlon 775 MHz, 8 gig HDD, Nvidia Vanta 16 Mb, 256 Mb RAM, Win ME.

Well, what have I tried (not in any particular order :-) )

Changed the BIOS battery
Removed every card except the video
Put in a different set of RAM
Motherboard has no obviously faulty capacitors
Did a through scandisk, some errors but fixed
Did a defrag
Went to PitStop and tested everything, including a virus scan - nothing
AdAware is up to date and reports nothing
AVG is up to date and reports nothing
Regcleaner found some no longer needed settings and removed them
SpyBot 1.6 is up to date and reports nothing
Agnitum Firewall is up to date
Went into MSCONFIG and stopped everything that was not necessary
Windows manages Virtual Memory
File system and virtual memory is 32 bit
Disconnected the CDRW and CDROM
System resources are 89% free
PC Health reports power supply voltages as within limits
RAM and CPU is detected OK
Tried restoring to a previous date - nope nothing changed

I cannot reload Win ME as it looks like the cd is lost, borrowed and not returned, or worst thrown out :-(

What the hell have I overlooked - it must be something (and probably simple).

172075 2003-09-01 01:32:00 Fire up in safe mode. Check device manager and expand out all devices. Exclude system and USB. Ensure that each of the drives, video card, keyboard, mice and display device are only mentioned once. Delete extra's from the top down, leaving the last. Be careful under the disk controller heading. If different devices are mentioned and you don't know whats in there, restart PC normally and check in the device manager. It would have loaded only the device that is installed.
Restart PC.

172077 2003-09-01 10:06:00 Pheonix, I am impressed as I always are with your answers to peoples problems.

There were several monitors, keyboards, mice, modems and so on.

I"m getting there , but some questions.

USB Controllers = 17 entries i.e. 8 X USB Root Hub etc
Should I remove the duplicates?

HDD Controllers = 3 X primary IDE cotroller (local fifo)
3 X Seconday IDE Controller
When I try to remove the duplicates am told, This device is part of a Multi function device and cannot be removed independantly. To remove, select and remove the parent.
Parent Device = No descri[tion available. Not too sure what to do :-(

Human Interface device = USB Human Interface Device
What is a human interface device ?

Sytem devices lists 4 x IRQ holder for PCI steering, 3 x motherboard resources, 2 x numeric data processors and so on. Can I/ should I leave these duplicates?

In any case, there is already a huge difference in performance, no lockups and it is much faster. Thanks very much for your help.

172078 2003-09-01 10:15:00 Thanks for the reply Kiwibeat. As you will see Pheonix has solved most of the problems and probably all of them when he gets back to me.

We have three machines, all with ME and all around 5 years old.
This is the first real big problem we have had with ME, other than when I have done something stupid :-)

We have win98SE and that was going to be the last resort. :-)

172079 2003-09-01 10:54:00 OK lets start with the easy answers :)
1/ Human interface refers to a usb device such as keyboard or mouse. If unsure, just remove and restart PC. Usually, if it is in the device manager under normal booting, then it is meant to be there.

2/ With the USB's, it appears as double what you expect. But you can remove all in safe mode and restart and it will sort itself out. Why I didn't recommend it earlier is that it is best to do on it's own.

3/Pay's to leave controllers and system alone, things can go horribly wrong (now ask me how I know :P )

Glad to have helped.

BTW, if you look for a folder called i386 (think it's under windows) it has the files for installing ME again. You can burn them to a CD for future use, include a record of your windows licence number. You may have to turn on the "show hidden files" options under folder options to see it.

172080 2003-09-01 10:56:00 ooops, I think that should have been the "options" folder, not the i386 :D Pheonix (280)

> more advice help etc

Kiwibeat: I have been wanting to ask this for sometime so hope you don't mind :), but I have noticed that on numerous occasions you say to email you for help/advice/whatever. Why is this? Don't you think advice should be kept to the thread so that future searches by forum users can find (hopefully) the solution to their same/similar problem?

Just curious.

172082 2003-09-01 21:30:00 Great stuff Pheonix, nah won't ask how you know, as it sounds like you had a great experience yourself on venturing down that path.

I do try to learn not to go 'everywhere' where others have been :-)

In our case Human Interface will relate to a digital camera hooked to her computer - so will leave well alone. I remember it was not easy to install in the first place :-)

She is overjoyed now that her machine works as it did long ago, I will have to wait awhile yet for access to it, to put the finishing touches in place. By direction, you have a heap of thanks on your plate :-)
