172015 2003-08-31 12:25:00 Hi Team

Yesterday I tried to upgrade Old Faithful (Win 98 original) to Adobe Reader 6.0 from the July 2003 PCW cover CD.

After patiently waiting for the install process to conclude, I was hit with the error message "OS not supported". This surprised me as V 6.0 is supposed to be compatible with W98.

Has anybody else had trouble installing version 6.0 on Win 98? (not SE or ME).

Cheers

172016 2003-08-31 12:30:00 Adobe state its compatable wirh Windows 98SE .

I would take it from that they don't support W98 OE (Old Edition) .

Check it yourself here ( . adobe . co . uk/products/acrobat/acrrsystemreqs . html#60win" target="_blank">www . adobe . co . uk)

Time for an upgrade Billy . . .

172017 2003-08-31 23:00:00 Thanks God

It seems PCW got it wrong then, as the CD says V 6.0 is compatible with W98/ME but doesn't stipulate SE. I reloaded Adobe 5.0 which is quite adequate anyway.

I don't think I'll bother to update the old girl, I am easing her into retirement as a print server and networked junk file storage device, though I am smoothing the path by giving her a heart transplant via a compatible second hand 300Mhz processor I happen to have lying around.

Cheers

172018 2003-09-01 04:22:00 My new laptop came with WinME on it. I have installed Linux on most of the disk, but there are a few things which need Windows, so ...

I installed Reader 6.0. It's all very nice. BUT. The "executable" is about 3.8 MB and it takes much longer to load than the version 5.x, while you see the splash screen and the list of subsidiary files being loaded . I can't change the default for PDFs back to version 5. I can start version 5 and open a file with it, but I can't get it the other way. :_|

I think you're better off as you are, Billy. I'm going to uninstall 6.0 .

172019 2003-09-01 05:14:00 There is a trick to make it load faster Graham, I'll try and find the site for you.

My only gripe with 6.0 is that it DOES NOT like tabbed browsing with Mozilla.

172020 2003-09-01 05:29:00 I had trouble printing with Adobe 6. I either got a miniscule text in the middle of the A4 sheet or a text which was folded over on the right hand side. My printer is working fine when I print from Word 2000. I tried all the options I could find before giving up and printing the article direct from the web page. Any thoughts? Adobe 6 opens faster than Adobe 5 on my Win98SE O/S.
Regards Robert.

Why not just use the linux version though?
