171955 2003-09-01 00:44:00 Godfather, all respect to ya(you are the godfather after all :D ) but not once did i mention replacement,Please read the words written before ripping it apart, and yes if my newly purchused vechicle had a severe fault where the outcome would be possible complete ruin and/or ongoing problems i would be seeking a refund.

no doubt about it....

Yes yes, that aint exactly how i worded it in the prior post, but elaborating on a point for the purpose of clarification ain't no crime.

I cant imagine being satisfied with any product that was sold in the state of windows, and i cant imagine any other company getting away with such practices.

171957 2003-09-01 06:08:00 *cough*

To my eternal shame :8} on the weekend I updated W98 on Old Faithful for the very first time ever.

Ialso downloaded all (relevant) patches for W2K including SP4, but I almost regretted it. The download took no time really (jetstream) but the install took well over an hour to complete. :O :O :O :O :O :O :_| :_| X-( X-( :)

The progress bar inched along at one bar every 5-6 minutes, so slow that I thought it was a gonner.

To date there have been no adverse side effects from my excursion to the bleeding edge of MS technology, but there is time yet.:|

Cheers

171958 2003-09-01 08:24:00 Hmmm MS has been known to produce doggy updates by reintroducing vulnerabilities that where sorted by previous patch. This is well documented. No wonder sys admins are reluctant to installl updates without testing........... mark.p (383)

Hi sc0ut

Red Hat (amongst other distro's) has an inbuilt updater which works kind of like Windows Update. It allows to you update various programs (general updates as well as security fixes). The updates for registered users comes from here (rhn.redhat.com). You can get them for free for one system using a Demo entitlement (if you answer a very quick survey every 6 weeks).

Yes Linux has flaws, which when found are quickly notified to registered users and the fix available for downloading.

This is part of a recent notification that I received as an example:
Security Advisory - RHSA-2003:265-05
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Summary:
Updated Sendmail packages fix vulnerability.

Updated Sendmail packages are available to fix a vulnerability in the
handling of DNS maps.

Description:
Sendmail is a widely used Mail Transport Agent (MTA) which is included
in all Red Hat Linux distributions.

A bug has been discovered in the handling of DNS maps in Sendmail 8.12
versions before 8.12.9. A remote attacker can exploit this issue to
crash the instance of Sendmail dealing with the request. We believe
that the nature of the bug would make remote exploitation of this issue
difficult, if at all possible. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures
project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CAN-2003-0688 to this issue......

171961 2003-09-01 12:22:00 Me too Beetle.

All software I use is kept up to date.

If an update stuffs the computer then I go back to my backup.

For Beetle only....
I hope I never offended you by my reply to your post a couple of nights ago. There was no need to apologise to me as I can see your point.

Just as a matter of interest Beetle....
Have you ever tried finding out whether there is a CUG (Computer User Group) near you?

We have one of these groups in Tokoroa. You may find that this will help as someone just may say that they will come and help you.
