171946 2003-08-31 13:43:00 Conspiracy theories abound, and are only exceeded by the paranoia it seems.

For a more rational and balanced view of the EULA that terrifies some read this (archives.neohapsis.com)

Do I update? Yes.
Do I choose to control the process? Yes.
I also have a NAT enabled router and would be uncomfortable on broadband without it.

Overall I see it as no different to my vehicles.

I have had several new cars (new as in new from the factory) and all have had "OEM upgrades" or parts replaced by the maker, as part of an on-going quality control program at some time in their life. Some of these "upgrades" have been several years after the vehicle was made.

It matters not that it was Ford, Mazda and BMW. They all had identified problems later on in the products life, and responsibly corrected it.

When the cars have been "recalled" by the maker, the parts were fitted free of charge, however I paid the cost of physically going to the service depot to have them fitted. Very much like Windows update, where you pay to collect the free update.

Now if I had the attitude of some here, I would have said "No" I don't trust your motives, my car might go slower. My car might tell them how I drive (yes it may from the on-board computer).

In saying "no", you would place the integrity of the vehicle at risk.
That places other (road) users at risk.

We have seen the effects of this in the last few weeks on the internet.

While for some, the updates may have caused some performance issues, in my case (5 different PCs) not one issue has arisen. Its a minority effect.

So, to comment on PoWas points raised.
1. No difference on any system here.

2. Security is important. Don't assume that being safe today counts for tomorrow, but NAT makes the issue redundant as mentioned (for today)
I have a duty of care to ensure that my clients data is kept secure in a prudent manner.

3. Bandwidth. If everyone had updated their system, we would have had a large reduction in bandwith used (no worms propagating) in the last week or two.

4. Privacy. Paranoia, read the link above.

As to devoting time and energy to downloading them, I work as normal while they are downloading (Downloading from Windows Catalogue, updates are permanently kept)

I do periodic security updates (AV etc) and install the downloaded and archived updates. The only down time is the reboot.

171947 2003-08-31 14:10:00 I dont have the update service running so no,unless something is broken then it aint getting patched, especially considering the huge amout of patches a new install of xp desires,Plus ms are unable to garentee there patches aren't crap.Having said that,i have installed sp1,(not the one with the media player crap though)

And on systems i build for others,i have it set to notify and let the user choose.

As to the car anology?

Holy smokes,if one of my vechcles was recalled due to a manufactering defect then i would be getting a refund, not a patch thank you very much, and i would never buy that brand again.

171948 2003-08-31 20:27:00 No,I don't update....it's a matter of not trusting Microsoft....I did however install the blaster worm patch....I always update Norton Internet Security and Norton Anti Virus

You might as well forget about buying anything in that case. They all get recalled at times.

With the size of the windows updates to download. If you make the habit of checking every week or so for updates you won't find yourself with 150+MB of updates to do.

Also, I didn't have ANY troubles from the MS Blaster and it's variants because my system was fully patched up for that problem over a month before the MS Blaster worm was even released out in to the world. Sure I had a firewall running as well but I wouldn't have needed to as my system was patched.

171950 2003-08-31 20:41:00 If people don't trust Microsoft why bother using their software in the first place?

It's also rather hard to complain about said operating system when you're not running it the way it is meant to be, which is with all the relevant security updates.

171951 2003-08-31 20:53:00 Yes, I update usually within a few days of issue.

My daughter doesn't update and has had no problems.... until the worm came along.

Moral to this story??

I applaud your negotiation skills then .

So . . you would demand a new replacement car, 3 years down the track when they offered to fit a modified camshaft belt cover, as feedback had shown an oil leak may occur? Even though they replace the Cam belt free of charge while they do it .

This is on a BMW . You really expect they would give you a new car instead?

Or an air intake duct replacement on a Ford, as there had been a case of a fire that could have been attributed to the design, a couple of years after it was first fitted . A new car instead sir? Certainly

Ooh look, a flying pig . . . :O

171953 2003-08-31 23:16:00 I install the service packs. That's about it. Up to SP3 win2k. Need 4 somehow, I'm on modem. Cannot be bothered installing little fixers.
Office - nope.
Anti virrus - yes. automated.

171954 2003-09-01 00:23:00 I use win98se :D.

Can't be stuffed updating etc...

Anyway I dual boot mandrake linux 9.0 so if I get a virus I can reboot into linux, copy all the files onto the linux partition, reinstall windows, and copy the files back onto windows from linux. All that would be more fun than updating regulary, and MS sometimes releases bad patches.

Cheers
