| 171937 | 2003-08-31 08:10:00 | Running XP Home Have update set to auto, and to download updates it finds, then advise me what there is so that I can choose whether or not to install. Normally I choose to install, as having the search done on auto the updates come in small batches. |

| 171938 | 2003-08-31 09:30:00 | use 98Se and no I dont do a lot of updates patched it as i like it a wahile back am using zonealarm and panda antivirus and pestpatrol and spybot adware pro windowasher regcleaner etc I also keep an compressed image or 2 stored away so can repalce the entire C: in 10 to 15 minutes just in case of a disaster . |

He told me that after our discussion he checked and found 42 waiting for him. He also claims that after downloading SP1, the outstanding had dropped to 21. Hours of the stuff. |

| 171941 | 2003-08-31 12:44:00 | Do I update?? Hell no! Why? 1) Performance. XP SP1 is miles slower than unpatched XP - even when they re-issued the slowdown fix. Also unpatched XP boots into windows like 2x quicker and provides excellent performance for games. I have downloaded DirectX 9 but thats the exception :) Windows Media player 9 - heck no, I'll stick with my privacy and some free players that are 10x better. All in all, you buy a fast pc because of its performance hence why you don't download things that will make it slower. 2) Security - waived. No need for security updates for the OS. I think I'm pretty safe behind a NAT Router, with Norton Internet Security on all the pc's. Plus once I get my smoothwall working, not even a skynet type virus could infect me :) 3) Bandwidth. What a waste of your monthly limit downloading microsoft patches. I can think of lots more thinks that are worthwhile to download for that 600+ mbs. 4) Privacy. Have you realised that MS have changed the way windows update works now? I believe it actually sends stuff about you off to MS. Read the new EULA. In summary I'm not going to waste my time on security updates - thats all they seem to be releasing these days. If theres any good bug fixes I'll get them, or if they release a decent SP2 for XP, that is even better performance than XP I'll get that off the PCW cd, or maybe from JetstreamGames if they start hosting it on there :) Depends what you want to devote your life on. If you want to focus your time and energy on downloading windows updates everyday, then thats up to you :D |

The more people believe that they are reliant on "updates" - the better the marketshare for Micro$oft. Gather around all freemen who use things like Mozilla, Eudora, V com.com security, and of course, Black Ice Defender. Celebrate with me your yoked-off bondage from what we are SUPPOSED to do. |

| 171944 | 2003-08-31 13:36:00 | Windows Update?? what is that? nahhh just kidding i download the bid ones at work, and the small ones at home (56k@home) Win2k >I also keep my Red Hat updated i'm just queries i've played with RedHat & Linux who makes the Updates? how often do they have critical updates? i thought Linux didn't have floors/flours {witch one?} i went and looked at my dads PC and he needed about 150MBs of Critical and recommended updates on win NT 4 . 0 . . . on his 56k LOL not worth time of day |
