171869 2003-08-31 06:18:00 Hmm....

Our people here at work purchased a stack of Genius mice for our office here. They lasted less than a month before they were completely shot. Have found that they aren't renowned for their quality control etc.

I think trying it on another PC should answer your question fairly quickly. Also check all the pins are straight and aligned so there is no shorting or anything like that.

171870 2003-08-31 06:36:00 The hot news is that the optical mouse works properly when plugged into the PS/2 socket on my wife's Presario desktop, so the plot thickens.

Added point: my wife's 'normal mouse' on her Presario has a scroll wheel between the left and right buttons and so does the new optical mouse. My laptop conventional mouse doesn't have a scroll wheel. I now remember plugging a non-optical, but wheeled, mouse into my Toshiba op before and it went berserk then too.

171871 2003-09-01 05:31:00 Laptops are funny. And I don't mean "amusing". :D I haven't tried running two mice on a desktop, but you're supposed to be able to on most laptops. (I think that's because those stalks and touch pad "mice" aren't as popular as the manufacturers would wish.:D There's lots of scope for interaction there.)

If an ordinary mouse works, the optical one should too. Wouldn't life be simple and boring if everything worked as it should? :-(

I have re-run the driver install and ALL IS WELL. I must have fluffed the install somehow, first time round.

Grateful thanks to all those who offered suggestions and encouragement.

PS (Why do I feel foolish?)
