171880 2003-08-31 05:56:00 I have posted this to linuxquestions and suse, but with no joy.

I have just installed a old Lucent pci
modem, downloaded the required drivers for Mandrake 9.1
and SuSE 8.2.MDK 9.1 is working fine, but I can not get
SuSE 8.2 to recognize the pci modem.

lspci -v: 00:09.0 Communication controller: Lucent
Microelectronics F-1156IV WinModem (V90, 56KFlex) (rev
01)
Subsystem: GVC Corporation LT WinModem 56k
Data+Fax+Voice+VoiceView+Dsvd
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0,
IRQ 11
Memory at cefebf00 (32-bit, non-prefetchable)
[size=256]
I/O ports at d400 [size=8]
I/O ports at d000 [size=256]
Capabilities: [f8] Power Management version 2

I manually load lt_modem and lt_serial and then check
the loaded modules.OK

Running wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf gives the
output:sorry no modem was detected.
Any help would be appreciated

Lachlan.

171881 2003-08-31 07:29:00 If the modem you've installed is a windows software based modem (Winmodem) then it won't work under Linux. There are some which do work but it's one heck of a mission to get it up and running.

Personally i would spend some cash to but a modemt that linux supports and preferrably one which comes with actual Linux drivers

hope that helps.

PS: I do recall seeing a post on the RED HAT site regarding software (Winmodems) running under Linux. They had a step by step guide, tried looking for it but no luck.... sorry :(

171882 2003-08-31 08:01:00 PC World July issue see Geoff Palmer's article on installing 'winmodems' on Linux. Its all a matter of finding the right driver for the kernel. Mzee (158)
171883 2003-08-31 09:02:00 Most latest versions of Linux support Winmodems. So a little bird told me ;-);-);-) Holy Cow (4475)
171884 2003-08-31 10:29:00 I have the Lucent pci modem working with Mandrake 9.1(I am using it now).I have the correct drivers for Suse 8.2(thanks to ltmodems),but I can not get Suse to detect the Lucent pci modem.

171885 2003-09-01 04:32:00 I would say that Suse expects more from users than Mandrake. ;-) Have a look at what Mandrake has set up with: "dir -l /dev/modem" on the Mandrake machine. It will be a link to the actual "machine name" for the modem. I'm pretty sure that all modem-using programmes will expect the /dev/modem to be set correctly. Graham L (2)
