Well for my 1000'th post at PressF1, I thought I should share something profound with all those those file sharers out there.

Everyone knows you can get into a bit of trouble for downloading your fav music etc from P2P and should the police come a knocking, you need a little protection :)

If you haven't started to encrypt your shared folder, then its about time you started. PGP Personal (www.pgp.com) is great option for this. Using PGP Disk, you can make a PGP disk which will mount as a Drive letter (F: ) or folder on your windows system. This disk is always encrypted with a 256bit cypher and you can only access your files, if it is mounted. You can then store all your P2P files in that encrypted folder, just change where your shared folder is located within kazaa/emule/dc++ etc.

Problem is you have to mount this disk and enter your password well before you start your P2P program, otherwise your shared folder won't be visible and you won't be able to upload/download anything. Now this can be a hassle if you need to launch 3 or more different apps to be used with the filesharing program. E.g The encrypted disk, kazaalite k++, speed up, and PeerGuardian (to block the RIAA ranges).

Anyway with a little advice from this months PCW, and google I have created a useful batch file that can be used.

--------------
@echo off

"C:\Peer to Peer\Mount Kazaa Shared PGP Disk.lnk"

echo Enter in your password to mount the shared files PGP disk.

pause

rem Note: For 2K/XP the batch file links to shortcuts of the actual exe's.
"C:\Peer to Peer\Kazaa K++.lnk"
"C:\Peer to Peer\Speed Up.lnk"

cls
--------------
You just paste that into a text file, rename the file as .bat and it'll run.

The code above will mount your PGP disk and you will be asked to enter your password to decrypt it so you can access the files in it. Then all you need to do is press any key (in the batch window) and it will load up the other programs like Kazaa k++, Speed Up etc.

Remember, if there wasn't a pause in the batch file, then all the programs would open up at once and you wouldn't have time to enter your password, consequently you won't be able to upload/download anything.

-> Remember to make shortcuts to the pgp disk itself and the actual programs you want to run.
-> Then put those shortcut files (.lnk) in a special folder, then put the path of those shortcuts into the batch file.
-> You can use this method for all your P2P programs

Good luck and have a great week everyone!

172521 2003-09-02 12:18:00 Who are you trying to protect your mp3s from by encrypting them?

Its not really going to help if the RIAA come banging on your door.

172523 2003-09-02 13:26:00 Well done on those 1000 posts PoWa :) I'm sure they haven't all been about your own problems like some other people in this forum :p

For starters the RIAA can't come banging on doors in NZ, they are americans. There is a group in NZ that might, but that hasn't happened yet. They would need to subpoena your name from your ISP. Then they would need a warrant to actually get anything from your house, otherwise it is inadmissable in court. Then what can they find on the hard drive? Nothing - its encrypted - therefore no evidence. PoWa's logic sounds pretty solid to me.

Only thing left to worry about is your ISP keeping logs. You can get around this with a program called Http-tunnel (http://www.http-tunnel.com). Basically it creates a secure 128bit SSL encrypted connection from your machine, directly to their servers. You can then surf and play games etc from there and the only data the ISP can see is an encrypted stream going to and from the http-tunnel servers.

172524 2003-09-02 21:16:00 It is my understanding and I could be wrong here, that part of the new computer laws that are coming to you in NZ, that if for some reason your computer was searched and you had encryption such as a secure drive or folders which would otherwise not be accessible without passwords, the courts can "order" you to reveal the passwords and contents.

Apart from that, nothing like keeping your data safe and secure from all others though.

Congrats on the 1000.

172525 2003-09-02 22:26:00 I happen to agree with Gordon. I'm sure it was introduced under the guise of "anti-terroism" legislation. I know in Britain, you can get up to 20years in prison for not revealing password.

Congrats on 1000 posts there POWA.mmm now for the next 1000?? :)

172526 2003-09-02 22:44:00 Hmm. Its reasonably common for people to forget their passwords and thats easily proven.
