172158 2003-09-01 06:20:00 I have a LAN consisting of winxp and win98se using crossover cable. Everything works fine. Now I would like to add another win98se to the existing LAN. I am using dial-up at the moment. Is there a way to connect 3 pc using crossover cable? Or can someone suggest a good/cheap switched hub/router?

Thanks.

172159 2003-09-01 06:28:00 Get a switch $40-100+ 5 or 8 port. Just get a generic one for a home network. Hop into the PF1 FAQ page for hints on networking and this site (www.wown.com) is an excellent resource for sharing connections and networking in general.

172160 2003-09-01 06:31:00 No way to network 3 or more PC's with a cross-over cable.
You will need to purchase a hub/switch. A 5-port one will do the job but not much price difference for an 8-port one.

Should be able to pick up an 8-port switching hub for about $60-$70.
You will also need 3 CAT5 straight-through cables (Your existing cross over cable won't work)

172162 2003-09-02 04:30:00 CYaBro,

You can network 3 or more PC's with a cross-over cable but it's cheaper to use a switch hub as you can pick up 8 port switches around $40.

To use a peer to peer network with 3 PCs, requires one computer to have 2 Network Cards (basically it acts like a router/hub) and each crossover cable connects to that PC, also the computer must have a seperate IP address for each network card it has.

The reason why you may use a similar method to this is The 1st computer is the gateway/firewall to the internet using an ADSL ethernet modem, then it connects to the main computer or another switch.

172163 2003-09-02 05:55:00 So you can't connect 3 PC's with A cross-over cable. You need 2 of them! & a second network in one of the PC's! CYaBro (73)
172164 2003-09-02 06:04:00 So we are both right :) CYaBro (73)
172165 2003-09-02 07:24:00 Just to add IMHO if you have a shared adsl connection through an external modem/router its best that the modem/router is the gateway and that requires a switch/hub. No need to bother with ICS in that case as well and the connection is not reliant on one PC being on (the gateway) just the modem/router.

172166 2003-09-02 09:46:00 I've done what Kame mentioned, but with 4 PC's... and just bridged the connections to get them all on a one LAN.

We had 4 ex-servers.... already had two NIC's in them, and the guy I was with wanted to try it just for the hell of it, and stuck with it.. :-)

172167 2003-09-02 10:48:00 Hehe,

OK but what if I buy 'a 15 M Cross-over cable' and cut it into 5M... well you get the drift :P
