172175 2003-09-01 04:57:00 Hi All,

I am contemplating moving my server to linux from win2000 after a bad case of the Blaster worm.

My server is a bare bones install of win2000 with internet connection sharing, basic networking and a firewall.

Server hardware:
-> P2 250 (or thereabouts)
-> 32mb RAM
-> 1GB HDD
-> Internal Dynalink ADSL modem, model ALH110
-> Generic 10/100 network card

Software:
-> Remote admin software (so I don't have to be sitting at the box to work it).
-> Tiny personal firewall.

Other info:
-> I have Jetstart via Xtra, and I use another ISP for my email.

I would like help with a few things, as know bugger all about linux as a server.
What I would like to do is have the server share its internet connection to the other pc's on my network which run a hodgepodge of winME and winXP and access it via a 10/100 switch.

In order to do that, I'm assuming I'll need to install linux, set up a firewall, set up networking, then set up the internet connection.

I looked at www.ahs-png.org which discusses installing my modem but I don't really understand it.

Can anyone give me a few pointers as to where to look or what to do?

Regards,
meee

172177 2003-09-01 06:49:00 I think smoothwall (http://www.smoothwall.org) is exactly what your looking for.

- I have it running on a 50Mhz 486. So your hardware is certainly not a problem.
- It does connection sharing, DNS, DHCP, firewall. It also can run a caching proxy (even transparently which is great).
- It uses a browser based interface so it can run head and keyboard-less.
- You won't have to learn much about linux to use it.

- The down side is you won't be able to use the system for anything else.But it sounds like you weren;t going to anyway.

There is a good supply of documentation at the site including hardware support (check out the forums too).

172178 2003-09-02 23:45:00 If its any help:
I have "Yoper", the Kiwi Linux working with a D-Link DSL=200 USB external modem with a driver from " Flash.Tux.org"
They say that it should have a 2.4.18 & upwards kernel. The current version of "Yoper" has a 2.4.20 kernel & Mandrake 9.1 has 2.4.21-13

I also have Lucent Win Modems working on both systems, faster than on Widows. ( PC World July 03: Geoff Palmer )

That might be the killer for the smoothwall idea bmason :(

If you can get an external router or Alcatel Stingray USB, you should have no worries running smoothwall
