172460 2003-09-03 03:14:00 Thankyou one and all. I am a bit hesitant about XP because of all the publicity of slowing down, security holes, phoning home etc.
My demands are modest - surfing, word processing, maybe the odd (or extremely odd) game.
But I will probably get into playing with digital photos and perhaps writing home video to CD or DVD which probably requires XP for stability.
Also want to use Dragon dictation which does work on W98.

Cheers

172461 2003-09-03 03:17:00 Also I prefer W2k but at work everyone else uses XP and I need to be compatible. Winston001 (3612)

You got a good deal then. I have not seen it in the paper for less than $80 here, average price is around $100-120.

> Expensive? Only compared to Linux my friend... ;-)

LOL True :-)

172465 2003-09-03 08:12:00 So you can experience the true speed and stabilty of a new O/S that has everything bar the kitchen sink thrown in with it also it will stress out your latest PC and all its ram as well .
You have to have it to keep up with the Bills of course as it will offer you a true mutimedia experience with the reassurance of total security and stability controlled of course by the one organisation that will of course automatically update and organise your vital data and private details the way it should be so you can honour the terms of the agreement you signed in small print specifying no liabilty for any damage or loss of data due to acts of god or patches that may or may not perform as promised .

172466 2003-09-03 10:07:00 I believe XP is more user-friendly and appealing - its bright, colourful etc.
Not everyone knows everything about computers, so if they come across one that's easy to use, looks good and does the job, then its good enough for them.

good man - I can't recommend it highly enough. But... keep in mind that those who knock this O/S may be
a) microphobes
b) never tried it
c) complacent in their existing O/S
d) can't afford the upgrade
e) clever

Winston. My first PC proper was with 98se & was OK as I knew no different. Later I upgraded to XP Home & was impressed. However I did have problems. XP was fairly new & the blurb said 128ram was enough. WRONG. Tried it with 256ram & much much better. Went to 512ram & beautiful. All I can say is, If you want it & can afford it go for it. It is far superior, IN MY OPINION, I know others will have their pet OS & disagree, but..... Let me put it this way,,, What car are you driving now, what did you have before that, why did you upgrade?? Do you still have an 11" black & white TV?? Or a 27" colour?? Poppa John

172469 2003-09-03 12:58:00 Have two PC's with windows ME, and bought a note book with XP a few months back, no major differences as far as I'm concerned, but a few programs I run on my ME machines won't work on the XP note book. I know ME pretty well, feels like an old friend. XP has a few quirks about it I've found when trying to update files that have been backed up to cd, like not allowing me to change them etc which doesn't happen with ME. Might one day turn one of my PC's into a linux machine for interest though. My brother in law has been hassling me for months to upgrade to XP, but unless your buying a new computer I wouldn't bother. Danger (287)
