172366 2003-09-02 13:01:00 Some comments from the guy who started it: (copied and pasted from another forum)

I posted it last night for a reason. It's right when Telecom are down on public relations from their DSL announcements - and have had many emails about them, and a petition will just reinforce the fact that we need MORE, SOONER.

Telecoms 256kbps DSL is too little, too late - the petition is getting that point across, and at the moment, it looks to be increasing in size steadily and will soon be doing a good job of it, if not already.

You support the cause, you sign. If you don't support the cause, don't sign. It doesn't matter if you don't think Telecom will "do anything or not" - numbers count, and we already have almost 1500 - surely that counts for something.

Ive been reading every entry since i started the petition at 11pm last night - most have Jetstream/start, lately quite a few have been 56kers looking to upgrade.

Its current signature rate is 2 per MINUTE - yes 2 per MINUTE (its been up for 12.5 hours, has almost 1500 signatures).

Thats impressive, if i don't say so myself.

172367 2003-09-02 22:46:00 I notice it is now up to 1608 signatures .

This petition (which I signed at 297), is given some additional oomph by reading in The Press this am that Gattung's salary is reported to be going up to over $2m in the coming year, and they are asking for a 58% increase in directors' fees . . .

That kind of obscene salary has to come from somewhere - divide that up amongst the number of Telecom customers, and then realise what other costs still have to come out of the fees we pay to this monopoly . $2m for one person in Telecom indicates what others must be being paid as well in this utterly unreal world of corporate self indulgence .

I also note that the usual sloppy journalist says she "earned" over $1m last year (I forget the actual range now) . No-one "earns" that kind of salary - they are paid it, and journalists should clarify their usage (e . g "Gattung was paid $xm last year") .

Of course if you are at the helm of a price gouger and monopolist like Telecom, she could perhaps argue that she "earned" her salary by gouging as much as she can out of her captive clientele .

My $0 . 2 worth .

172370 2003-09-03 05:42:00 It should be remembered,a monopoly can only exist by virtue of the goverment giving it the power to be so. Thomas (1820)
172371 2003-09-03 07:48:00 Is'nt the government the biggest monopoly? Pheonix (280)
