172249 2003-09-01 11:12:00 I have proxy program called Naviscope. It prefetches webpages and blocks ads in IE. When downloading a page from the internet or any type of internet request it has a little progress bar that shows how far the requests are.

Lately its been having multiple, continuous bars downloading from microsoft.com... thing is i'm not on the microsoft site at all.

I then had a look at task manager in the processes tab to see if i could spot anything and i noticed i have 4 instances of SVCHOST.exe running at the same time. All of them have different PID's and are using different amounts of memory. Another thing is that my system is contiuously saying my virtual memory is too low... my page file for both partitions on my drive is set to 512MB and I have 512MB of RAM as well so how am i short on memory.

All the PC's on my LAN have the same thing happening

So my questions are...
1) What is a PID?
2) What is SVCHOST.exe
3) How many instances of SVCHOST.exe should be running?
4) Is there something wrong with my system?

System Specs:
Celeron 1.7Ghz
512MB SDRAM 133Mhz
80G hard drive
GeForce FX 5200
Windows 2000 SP 4
Jetstream starter on a Nokia M1122 router/hub
my PC is on a LAN
all the other computers have the same OS and RAM.

172250 2003-09-01 11:56:00 1) What is a PID?

process ID number, this is a magic number uses by the OS (windows) to know which program is which.

2) What is SVCHOST.exe

microsoft will tell you that "Svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that run from dynamic-link libraries"
what that means in english is that lots of little bits of wondows are run under that name to save space, this includes things like services and drivers.

3) How many instances of SVCHOST.exe should be running?

you can have as many as the OS wants :-) my system has 5 at this time.
as far as i know 4-5 is normal.

4) Is there something wrong with my system?

in respect of the SVCHOST.exe : NO

is there some other thing wrong with your system that is makeing data requests to microsoft.com?? I don't know sorry.

172251 2003-09-01 12:02:00 Look in settings-control panel-admin tools-services and see if "automatic updates" is running. That is what will be checking/downloading with MS in case any updates are needed. Most likely it is that you can see. Pheonix (280)
172252 2003-09-02 02:22:00 Thanks guys :)

I've disabled the auto-update in Services and it doesn't download anymore. I'm not too worried about leaving it off as I update windows regularly myself.

I am now down to 3 instances of SVCHOST.exe but ifyou say it is necessary then I guess it's all ok.

Thanks for you help
