172771 2003-09-03 10:29:00 Anyone have any ideas on whether telstraclears new highspeed interent offering which includes 'seamless transitions from telecom' will be any good? (Go to telstraclear's website and click on the internet tab)

Anyone know if its independent of Telecom / JetStream?

Cheers,
Ashley

172772 2003-09-03 11:36:00 This was discussed here a week ago, and I suggested then that before the end of the year we may have LLU (Local Loop Unbundling) occur, which deregulates the network of the "Local Loop", or the cables from the exchange to the house.

That *could* in theory allow competition at ADSL provision level, though some of the mechanics are unclear to me at the moment.

Telstras comments confirm that belief though. They state it will be available wherever it is available at the moment from Jetstart.

That could only mean loss of the monopoly position of Telecom in my view.

172773 2003-09-03 12:01:00 There is a service utilising cable modem - not ADSL. So its unique.

They also have a service via Paradise which is located on TelstraClear and Paradise's www. This is on cable modem and also ADSL jetstream be it starter or the 256k or the full speed service. Its all on the web.

172774 2003-09-03 12:38:00 Telstra's abiliy to offer telephone line based ADSL has been very limited, only available in Auckland CBD I believe.

Cable ADSL is Wellington and Christchurch.

Where you may have missed the point nomad, is that after 23 September Telstra suggest they will have the ability to provide phone-line based ADSL wherever its presently available from Telecom

This is a bit "unique" to use your phrase.

They do suggest it will be business customers first, then they will make it available to residential.

Now, the Commerce Commission releases its decision about 23 September regarding LLU.

Do we see a pattern emerging here, or is it a set of random co-incidences?

172775 2003-09-03 12:58:00 I read somewhere someone saying that if the Local Loop gets unbundled it may end up the power situation, it may not be a benefit for the end user. -=JM=- (16)

That is a worrying concept indeed, Although everyone could just go back to dial-up if that happened, Then the companies involved would have to go bankrupt instead of hiking up the prices so we could pay the billion dollar debts accrued from there mismanagement .

Then new realistic offerings would spring up .
