172712 2003-09-03 07:42:00 Okay I've just got a brand new 120gig Serial ATA Hard drive... I've installed windoze XP. What should I use to partition it. I'm looking at 4 30gig partitions. I've heard about Partition Magic but my friends say that half the time it freezes... I've also found a Disk Management program in XP but I don't know how to use it. Please someone help. 172713 2003-09-03 07:47:00 Partition magic will do the trick. Needs to be the latest version with drives that large. FDISK would also do it but you would need to reinstall windows after. pavlr (3220)
172714 2003-09-03 07:49:00 Partition Magic 8 is the easyest way. It works alright for me. BootyLicious (526)
172715 2003-09-03 08:28:00 Partition Magic 8 does not freeze. It appears to have frozen but its actually still working e.g you move the mouse and it moves 30secs later. You must never stop the PM process or you will regret it.

Are you wanting to run Windows XP off the new hard drive??? That to me sounds like the best idea, because the new hard drive is probably much faster than your older one and you will see a good performance increase.

Don't make NTFS partitions with PM. Make fat32 then convert them from inside windows to NTFS.

You only need less than 3gigs for XP. Make a swap file on a separate partition and maybe put it at the start of the drive. However the OS boots much faster if the OS is on the first partition. More info in this thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz).

172716 2003-09-03 08:55:00 How do I convert them from inside Windows. Will converting to NTFS delete anything on the drive?

Does partitioning with Partition Magic 8 require drive to be formatted afterwards?

172719 2003-09-03 09:23:00 You could get by with the PM bootdisks.

As for talking about getting PM off someone thats kinda illegal and others might get annoyed with that, cos its not supposed to be on the forum. Some might help you if you contacted their email in profile, but I doubt it.

172720 2003-09-03 09:57:00 funny how no one mentions PM costs a lot of $$$$ ;-)

if you have formated it with fat32 you can redo your partions with ranish or some of the other FREE partition programs around. if you have NTFS format then its proberly just easier to delete the partions and start again. use ranish to partition then use windows to format on install.

you can get a few problems when converting fat32 to ntfs so its not highly recommended.

172721 2003-09-03 10:09:00 is there a big difference between NTFS and FAT32?
What do u mean by problems if converting from FAT32 to NTFS?

And also when partitioning is this the steps I should take?

1) Install windows xp
2) use some sort of software to partition hard-drive
3) format everything
4) re install windows xp
