2003-09-03 06:50:00 | How can I delete messages from the "inbox" of outlook express without highlighting the message. Highlighting the message opens it and thus a virus could be activated before the message is deleted | robotics53 (4506) | |
2003-09-03 06:58:00 | It won't activate unless you have preview pane on. To stop, go View-Layout and untick show preview pane. Now when you highlight an e-mail you can delete it without any fear that it will activate a virus. | Pheonix (280) | |
2003-09-03 07:08:00 | Thanks. I must say I like having preview "on", but if this is the only way to prevent the spread of a virus it is ok. Would be good if Microsoft had little boxes next to each message that one could tick, similar to hotmail | robotics53 (4506) | |
2003-09-03 07:19:00 | Yeah it is handy. My understanding is that a virus can be in the e-mail body as HTML code, hence will activate only when viewing the body of the message. I have heard that if you go Tools-Options-Read and tick the "Read all messages in plain text" it will also stop the virus activating. Though it has the disadvantage that a lot of things like links and fancy e-mails won't work either. My pick is having no preview pane :)

2003-09-03 07:23:00 | Maybe you can help again: when I double click to open a message it open small, how can I set it to open maximised | robotics53 (4506) | |
2003-09-03 07:38:00 | Open up a message, drag it up to right hand top of screen. Use the lower right to stretch the window out. Now close it. Now everytime you open a message, it will open up to this size.

Thus when OE is opened I download my mail, view the headers and trash the dodgy-looking emails and spam then I finally click on the Preview shortcut in order to view the messages instead of opening each one. I also have the settings to display messages in plain text so that any with HTML formatting will not run their code. It would all be a bit of a hassle if I didn't use OE just for Hotmail and check just once a day. My usual email client is Eudora which affords a bit more protection against the dodgy stuff. |
