172692 2003-09-03 02:24:00 Is there tip, technique, or software program that can reveal the hidden URL's that some websites use to download automated installs? Such as, the gooogle toolbar installer, and the MS update/download center .

I'm not talking about placing the mouse over the link and looking in the status bar, because these can be cloaked . I know that the webmasters are trying to stop people from direct linking to their files . But sometimes I want to keep a backup of an older version so I don't have to use the new one, or even paste the link into my download manager (capture links to the clipboard does not work) .

I already know I can scan my system before, and then after go look for the installer in IE temp/windows temp or whereva folder but surely there must be a better and quicker way?

thanks for posting an answer

172693 2003-09-03 02:46:00 If you search google, there are apps that fly under the name "Leechers", as they "Leech" apps as such.

Personally, I use MozillaFirebird from mozilla.org (http://www.mozilla.org) and the downloader there shows you where its coming from, regardless of how the download began!

Its an excellent browser, well worth a look... What've you got to lose?

Hope this helps

Cheers

172694 2003-09-03 04:49:00 Can you give me an example of a site, and I'll root it out for you Greg S (201)
172695 2003-09-03 05:39:00 Ok... just as an example "google toolbar 2"

I'm not so much looking for a download manager or p2p software (likeBT), just a simple way to find the exact download URL.

I will be checking out Mozilla/fire bird....thanks Chilling_Silently, however I was hoping to find something easier than switching browsers? :|

172696 2003-09-03 05:44:00 Sorry, I couldn't quite fathom what you meant by "google toolbar 2". What I meant was... can you give me a site's URL where there is a download from an anonymous source, and then I'll investigate where it comes from, and give you the method on how to determine where it's downloading from (assuming I've read your query correctly). OK -+JM+- That's pretty positive. :D So hows it done?
and does it work on all sites? Including those using php etc?

172699 2003-09-03 07:22:00 I just went in with MozillaFirebird and clicked the download button. Waited for it to start and copy/pasted the address it was coming from. -=JM=- (16)
