172546 2003-09-02 08:49:00 I am planning on getting a digital camera by Nov end.
Should i wait till Nov if the prices for digital cameras are gonna come down or should i buy it now?

The one i am planning on getting is Canon PowerShot S50.
It came out in Feb as said by dpreview and i was wodering if the price may go down as it gets old. Its listed currently at approx US $550
Any piece of advise/thoughts on this please.

Thankx :)

172547 2003-09-02 09:47:00 Personally I would wait. The $NZ is appreciating against the $US and the price of technology is steadily falling. Winston001 (3612)
172548 2003-09-02 10:17:00 Wait till a newer model comes out ,or is just about to come out, then you'll get a good deal. Here (etown.co.nz) is a good price, but I don't know about the guantees and servicing. Rod ger (316)
172549 2003-09-02 11:20:00 They are like computers -- you can wait forever. :-)

If that is the model you have your heart set on and you don't need it like NOW then wait because sure as eggs the price will come down. The problem is that you may like the next model even more and decide to wait for the price of that one to come down...... LOL

172550 2003-09-02 11:40:00 You may want to know Canon is releasing a entry model digital SLR out in mid/late Sept, listed as $899US for body or $999US with one lense. 6 megapixel based on the entry model Canon film SLRs..

Other than that high end Nikon/Canon are nice. Sony is trendy, Olympus, Kodak, Fuji is just as good...

Do a search on the web .. B&H based in NYC does mail orders with people round the world. V respected. Check with customs 1st re: taxes first. NZ are crazily priced. NZ is about 1/3 more I guess from window shopping... B&H is respected under www.photo.net, also this; www.dpreview.com

Hope this helps...

172551 2003-09-02 11:42:00 Def wait some time after this Canon 300D comes out, surely they will force price drops off the current cameras now ...

At $899 for a digital SLR, surely compact digital will do a price drop... Nikon is suspected to have one out by Xmas ... to compete with Canon.

172552 2003-09-02 11:48:00 Roger,

Etown does parallel importing.. they are not local versions. The warranty will be provided by that shop - no problem. Getiing service at authorised stores after warranty can be a issue, they are asked not to service gray imports (aks parallel imports). This means even if u are willing to pay, they may not fix it for u. Also, within the warranty period its at that shop, u cannot just bring it to any Canon shop in the country and get it fixed.

Etown is located in Auckland. I asked for a registered Nikon last time, after time and time walzing around they finally admitted they do not buy from the NZ agent. Hence to say, they did try to scare me into buying their import by telling me that Auckland is out except them and prior by giving me a full retail price of that camera (trying to get me to buy a import I suppose).

This may help:

Quite an impressive camera with good options!

Couple advertised on TradeMe with start price at $800,so if reserve was much above this,it wouldn't be a bargain?

Dont know if trader would give warranty though?

Cheers,Kiwitas,;-)

172555 2003-09-02 21:33:00 I can vouch for the service given by B&H in New York.

www.bhphotovideo.com

Shopping via the USA will sometimes gives you a much better choice of models and add ons and sometimes a newer model not yet available elsewhere.

For shipping to NZ, make sure you consider the cost of shipping costs first and check with your customs office for import and tax costs though you should still get a reasonable or better deal.

Aside from B&H, have a look in the back of some photo magazines such as Popular Photography which should be available in NZ and have a look through the mass of adverts in the back for other USA based stores and what they have to offer for that model or other suitable models.
