It's not an exaggeration for sure. Things like calendar, dairies, address organisers, ... etc are given free - absolutely free, no gimmicks; towards end of year.

Not only in Japan but in most of the Asian countries like Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore.

But do remember that cars are much cheaper in New Zealand and the air quality is much better, fresher over here in NZ!

173065 2003-09-09 18:20:00 Try visiting www.etown.co.nz and check out their range of cameras and prices. I was on the verge of ordering a Fuji S602Z direct from US earlier this year but found it was cheaper to buy from etown in Auckland.
The going rate at the time to buy this camera in Wgtn was $2000.00
I ended up getting it for about $1288.00.

173066 2003-09-09 19:28:00 To mis-quote Qui-Gonn:

"there's always a better deal."

I have contacts in some industries, and tried to get a fishing rod wholesale for my brother in law and it was $10 more than duty-free price in Sydney.

With digital cameras, timing is often the issue. The camera selling in a retail store in Wellington was bought at the prevailing wholesale price a few months back when the model first came out and then shipped by sea and stored for a bit. The one in a store in Japan is now considered an old model and possibly at a clearance price. Be aware that Japanese cameras often don't speak English (digital cameras convert text in photos to the language they are set to ;\ )

We often see the end of run promotional pricing on the web and yes that is a bargain, but it doesn't mean anyone is getting ripped off. Same happens with heaps of things. Take a look at eBay. Heaps of the stuff there is items picked up in clearance bins.

173067 2003-09-09 20:17:00 I've been lurking, and in one case bidding, for a cam on TradeMe . There was a guy selling a new DigiMaster S500, 5 . 0 mega pix all-singing, all-dancing cam for a starter of $550 . I was outbid by the mad scramble about 30 seconds before the auction was due to end . All my meticulous planning went down the toilet when the cam reached $690 or so :o)

It seems the seller was bringing in cams from Taiwan by the suitcase full, then flogging them off in TradeMe for a still-handsome profit and what appears to be far less than NZ retail .

I checked out the brand but most of the sites were Chinese which wasn't a lot of help . 3 month warranty . I was mainly after quality images, good lens etc for my daughter's 21st birthday present .

I checked out a new Samsung Digimax V3 (in my price range) . It was only 3 . 2MP - maybe passable in terms of quality, 12 month warranty and a good precision lens .
