172966 2003-09-04 05:25:00 Hello my Knowledgeable Friends,
I have scanned, defraged, Search & Destroy is loaded plus Ad-Aware and downloaded AVG.I do a cleanup every time I shut down the computer. Every things is going very well indeed. Am I being paranoid to an absurd degree if I tell you I can hear a noise like a fingernail being run along the teeth of a plastic comb coming from my computer. It is only when a web page is loading or now and again by-its-self, just a short ripple now and then. The compaq Presario is about 4 years old. It has remained up-to-speed and there is no trouble that I can find. The noise may have been there all the time!!!!. Once it did the comb sound but at a very fast rate. It stopped and nothing 'fell off'. I also do a safe mode defrag and scan each month.
Should I worry or just be happy !! Or does the noise mean 'watchout hard drive is going to crash' !!!
Thankyou for your past help.
regards

172967 2003-09-04 05:30:00 The only "obvious" cause of such sounds is unlikely to be linked with anything the computer happens to be doing "electronically". It might be a cable drooping onto a fan. The fan blades would make such a noise, as well as slowly wearing off the insulation on the wires, and eventually seeing whether the fan plastic is harder than the copper wires strands. :D

Open the box and have a look. If a wire looks too close try to make it be a bit more distant. String is marvelous stuff. Sticky tape is not.

172968 2003-09-04 05:35:00 Hi ,Could be your fan, or fans are playing up. over time they accumulate dust on the blades, etc. But this doesn't explain what it has to do with Internet Explorer. Maybe its time to do a FULL backup onto another medium...Just a thought. electronhell (3374)
172969 2003-09-04 05:44:00 Sounds like the noise an HDD makes when writing or reading on my computers. Some are louder than others. Is it a hardware noise or coming from your speakers?

Take the lid off and have a look. A piece of plastic tubing used as a stethoscope can help narrow down the likely suspects.

Cheers

172970 2003-09-04 13:29:00 ok this is just a longshot here: go to the control panel and click on sounds and audio devices (win xp) or sounds (win9x) , click the sounds palette and in the programme event hunt for the annoying sound in question and kill it dotcommander (4338)
