173418 2003-09-06 10:10:00 Can someone please tell me how Beowulf works?

Do you download CD images and install/configure it on each machine, or buy it, or just run it under something else?

I'm interested in making a "big" server, capable of being split into handling several tasks (like a virtual web server, virtual file server, and virtual game server) which can access each other (so stats can be generated by the web "server" from log files in the game "server"), and is made up of several computers networked together.

173419 2003-09-06 11:08:00 This should cover most of what you need to know:
Massey's Helix Cluster (http://helix.massey.ac.nz/)

Bearing in mind that you are going to need a huge project for this sort of thing, as most normal web-servers are only powered off mid-range sort of machines just using server quality hardware.

I used at admin at Massey and the web-server handling the most traffic was a PIII 700 w/ 256 MB RAM - bearing in mind Massey is a big organisation.

I know you want one though. *drools*

Depending on what you are actually wanting to do, but these links might prove of interest :D
Linux Virtual Server (http://www.linuxvirtualserver.org) goes through the setting up of an LVS.
An LVS GUI (www.vergenet.net) under the BSD license.
Mandrake Clic (public.planetmirror.com) http download area. This is an interesting linux cluster distro, but not really what you are looking for :D

Hope these links prove to be of some use :)

173422 2003-09-07 03:10:00 What you want, and what you need are different things. A Beowulf cluster would be terribly inefficient running a "virtual web server", a "virtual file server", and a "virtual game server". Those tasks are not , and are not likely to be, written and compiled to use parallel processing.

The first two could (both) be handled with a 486DX2-66 processor with 32 MB or so. :D Just don't put a GUI on it. You might need a bit more grunt for a game server, and that could probably handle the other two tasks (and an FTP server, a DNS server, a ..., B-) in its spare time.

Try "beowulf linux" on google. That'll give you the original story (NASA), and an indication of the sort of things which are done with parallel processing.

Web servers and file servers are not heavy processing tasks. They're not all that heavy as data-processing tasks, either. There's a webserver which runs on a PIC processor (one of the 8-pin ones).
