173442 2003-09-10 10:18:00 Thanks to you all for your help on this topic. The answer I find is,"A reasonable minimum service life for a hard drive was between three and five years". This was decided under the Consumer Guarantees Act by the Disputes Tribunal in a straight forward case. Harvey Norman had to refund a Linda McCracken of Ashburton the price she paid for a replacement HDD which had been installed two years and five months before it failed.

Under the Consumer Guarantees Act: Goods must be durable. When they fail prematurely, the trader is obliged to fix the problem even if the manufacturer's wattanty has expired.

Thanks again,
Dumb bell.
