173406 2003-09-07 02:32:00 And don't forget XBox ---U G L Y. Just hold the controllers one after the other and see if you can't make the right decision from comparing the ergonomics of the handsets.

173407 2003-09-07 03:04:00 1. Can a PS2 play X-box Games? Nope. .. Can a modified X-Box play PS1 games? Yup.

2. Can a PS2 play DivX movies? Nope. .. Can a modified X-Box play DivX movies? Yup.

3. Can an PS2 be networked to your PC's? Nope. .. Can a modified X-Box play movies and mp3s right from your PC across a network? Yup.

4. Can a PS2 be modified to run Linux, and act as a standalone PC? Nope. .. Can an X-Box be modified to do this? Yup.

5. Can a PS2 run emulators to play classic arcade games/roms? Nope. Can an X-Box? Yup.

In fact, can a PS2 do any of the above with a mod chip? Nope. Can an X-Box be modified to do all of the above? Yup.

But if you prefer a limited, mass produced "entertainment unit" which CAN play DVD's, but not much more, then go right ahead and buy that bright, shiny PS2.

That is a very biased attitude. Why use a mod chip to run Linux on the Playstation 2 when it has its own Linux kit (made by Sony)???

When Xbox Live comes out, you will have to pay a yearly fee to access it for all games - for the PS2 it is up to the game developers to decide this.

And the Linux kit allows a kepyboard, mouse, etc to be connected and to be used as a standalone PC?

But we are seeing a trend towards this anyway . . . even on PC, etc . . . games such as the new RPG Star Wars game is all subscriber based, etc . . . It's just the way things are evolving .

173411 2003-09-07 04:09:00 I'll quite happily agree that the X-Box is a modified PC... it utilises a PIII 733mhz processor, with an Nvidia graphics chip as well... along with that, it has a hard drive, onboard network card, and USB ports.

Does that make it a cheap PC? Well... yes and no... I chose an X-Box because of the additional features you can use. If you are prepared to invest the time and a little money, you can end up with an X-Box which can act as a standalone PC, portable DivX player, mp3 player, DVD player, emulator of arcade games, emulator for PS1 games, etc.

That is certainly more "bang for buck" than a PS2. That said, the PS2 does have a wider game range, but for me, I like the ability to play more than just X-Box games and DVD's.

173415 2003-09-07 04:29:00 My last modified X-Box was stolen... All I have at the moment is a brand new X-Box from an insurance claim. Incidentally, I argued with my insurance company and they are paying for the X-Box modification for me...

Seems they took the same viewpoint that the modification in NZ was legal, and all it did was void the warranty. Tower Insurance are paying for a 120gig hard drive, and Xecutor 2.2 Pro mod chip.

They researched it themselves and felt comfortable enough to allow the claim to proceed.
