173382 2003-09-06 14:09:00 Wow... got angst?

I agree there is a bit too much OT stuff going on, but learn to live with it - if you're holier than thou don't come here. If you need this forum then live with it's quirks.

And as far as I can tell there are as many regulars around now as before, considering your rather high UID I doubt you've been here very long unless as a lurker or under another pseudonym.

173383 2003-09-06 20:13:00 We have been with AMI for vehicle & contents for a while now. We have a large capacity m'cycle which is one of the hardest things to get cheap insurance for but found AMI to be cheaper than companies catering specifically for this consumer group. Have had no problems with them.
However, if you are a home owner ask your bank for a quote to cover you for everything. We are currently doing this and it is looking quite competitive. You may also be in a position to negotiate things like bank fees etc if your Account Manager and you have a good raport.

173384 2003-09-06 22:24:00 Hi CSinclair,

Just thought I'd give you another point of view . I do work for all major insurance companies in NZ, so I see how they perform when you have a claim . My picks for personal service would be AMI and NZI (now joined with State Insurance)

I'm insured with AMI as have a business car and their premiums were far cheaper than others .

Things to keep in mind:
Premiums will be higher/lower depending on total amount you want to insure (ie $30,000 total cover) and the excess you want if you have a claim . The excess means the amount you have to cover yourself if something stolen, it can be no excess (higher premium), up to $500-$1,000 (lower premiun) . Premiums are the amount you pay per year for insurance cover and will also vary depending on your age, where you live etc .

Most companies cover you for a certain amount each claim, ie: if you get whole house cleaned out and you're covered for $30,000 total you should get the goods replaced up to $30,000 in value . If your stolen goods cost more than that amount to replace the max the insurance company will pay out is $30,000 .

Most companies also have an amount that they cover each item for and it varies a lot from about $1,000 per item to $2,500 per item . This means that if your policy covers you for $1,000 per item to replace electrical goods and your TV costs $900 to replace you can get a new one . If your TV costs say $1,200 to replace the insurance company only cover you for $1,000 then you either have to buy a cheaper TV or fork out the extra $200 for a better one . You can 'specify' more expensive items on your policy, ie $6,000 TV, so that the insurance company will replace it up $6,000 in value, but you will pay more premiums .

So, things you need to think about when getting the policy:
1 . The total amount of cover you need .
2 . If there are any expensive items that should have seperate cover
3 . The amount of excess you can live with, ie if your computer was stolen could you afford to pay a $100 excess or $500 excess?

Things to ask when getting a policy:
1 . Does the policy cover you to replace the goods- some policies only cover you for the 'indemnity' or second hand value of certain goods, such as TVs, fridges etc older than say 10 years . (This means that if your fridge is 15 years old they will only give you enough money to buy a secondhand fridge)
2 . What is the limit for unspecified items . This is the amount they will cover you to replace EACH item . They will be happy to tell you how much extra premium you need to pay to fully cover expensive items .
3 . Do they give a discount on your premium if you pay it more often, ie monthly instead of 6 monthly . Some Insurance companies will give extra discount if you pay monthly by direct credit .

A few things to note:
If you're flatting I think most insurance companies will not cover you if one of your flatmates nicks your stuff (ie anyone who has acccess to your house)

Keep receipts, take photos of your stuff, especially CD collection etc . . . it makes life much easier for everyone if something happens and you can prove what is missing .

Hope all this helps!
Joe

173385 2003-09-06 22:33:00 By the way Holy Cow-

I have no problem helping people here, even a bit OT . I generally 'lurk in the background' and only pop up to help when I know what I'm talking about .

A hell of a lot of people here have helped me in the past and I am very grateful . . . I only hope you don't have your computer stolen and find it's not covered by insurance!

All I am saying is the o/t questions around here are bit much, and get the feeling that a lot of them are posted for the sake of posting something.

173387 2003-09-06 23:29:00 Oh, and by the way Joe...... case in point - read the thread entitled: Big Gap where 29" TV was and you don't think I have a point regarding idiotic o/t threads. I think its pathetic Holy Cow (4475)
173388 2003-09-06 23:50:00 holy...
i know sometimes o/t threads can be just silly...i dunno what ones to show for example but if there was one just saying"ot: todays plan for me" or "ot: i gonna tidy my room today, what should i get rid of"
..yeah i'd think that ould be silly...

the reson i came here with the insurance question is because i'm deaf, and at the moment i think u would know that some businesses dont even check their emails till the end of the working week...like telecom, they ask for 48 hours or more to get a reply back to u when the email is there in a millisecond flat and probably only needs 5 mins for a reply...

so instead of emailing them when i know nothing about insurance i thought i'd come here and get my points straight and then know something about what i actually want to ask...then go and ask the insurance company without looking stupid...

i know they could have taught me etc but, theres always the knowledge of ripping ppl off...i know someone who got ripped off (on something completely different) coz he didnt know what it was but just dove into it and **** happens...

and if ur wondering why i havent mentioned "ringing them" its because i'm Deaf (as mentioned b4) and emailing/faxing is my only mode of communicaton with busniesses apart from going in face 2 face...hence why its annoying they take more than 1-2 days to reply...i also have to say some companys are brilliant, reply straight away or something...

so yeah... i can also say the regulars are still around..they just dont post..thats why we think they arent around...and theres work, family, friends, study for students... life goes too fast these days..

anyway..welcome to pressf1 holy since i've not seen u around b4...

cheers..

I'll post another post with reply to the insurance.. postings...

173389 2003-09-06 23:58:00 Joe, since u work with them..is it possible that i can add u to msn or something coz my head is going around and around and around with messy thoughts about this, like why this why that and whats the difference...and talking to someone who knows alot about it would help :)

if u dont want to..its cool i'm kind of thinking of asking my dad to help but hes a aussie and has aussie insurance so thats different yeah..

anyway i've printed off the 2 pages..and i know it prolly gonna grow...
and just re-reading it trying to pick it up :)

thanks for all ur posts so far...
