173331 2003-09-06 04:59:00 Is it legal to make money from lan parties.
As in let say I bought let say six good pc's, networked them in my garage & charged people a couple $ an hour to use them.
The reason I ask this silly question is I would be making money from games. & poor old Gates wouldn't like me getting rich on his Age of Myths would he.

Cheers

173332 2003-09-06 05:09:00 The situation sounds dubious, however, there is way that it is legal.

Because of licencing, if you installed Windows on each computer and a Microsoft game (or any other non-free game), then you would need a separate, legal CD for each computer.

However, if you use Linux and a free game, then it would be legal.

173333 2003-09-06 09:18:00 As long as the OSs and software are installed adhering to the licence agreements I think you'll be allowed, unless the agreement specifies you're not allowed to.

You're not hiring out the games as much as covering the costs of your time, power, etc.

173334 2003-09-06 09:48:00 Well It's like this.
I live in Whitianga (Coromandel Peninsula)& the town is growing fast. Although we have an internet cafe as such, it is only that, no gaming. So I thought as a personal enterprise I could set something up in the garage. Sure it would take a bit of money but it would be good fun.
But then there is the ethical side to it ,the last thing I need is young teens spending all their lunch money on gaming 24/7 when they should be at home doing their home work.

Maybe I should go up to the big smoke & have a peek'n'try.
