173530 2003-09-07 04:17:00 I am trying to help a friend with a 233mhz HP Omnibook running Win95 (yes, really!).

She has 2 CD-Rs from a course (original and a copy) that are not recognized on her m/c - she gets "Disk not ready". The CD-R works OK on my WinXP m/c, and a different CD-R works OK on her m/c, as do standard CD-ROM disks.

Any suggestions as to how or if I can get the dodgy CD-R to work on her m/c?

TIA

173531 2003-09-07 04:35:00 No suggestions are likely to work.

Basically some drives just plain won't work with some media, only way would be to re-copy them onto a different media.

My drive at home is a late model writer, but it won't work with Mitsubishi Disc's, anything else will work but not Mitsi's.

I reccomend Imation discs, they are cheap and I have never had them not work in a drive yet.

173532 2003-09-07 04:36:00 Replace her CD Rom drive. :D

Those disks don't have enough contrast to be read on it.

The cheaper option would be to make another copy with a machine and brand of medium which you know can produce a disk her one can read.

173533 2003-09-07 05:28:00 I'd tried copying to an Imation CD-RW disk - didn't work either. :(

I'd warned her she was probably SOOL, so it won't come as too much of a surprise when I tell her the best option is a new CDROM/laptop.

Thanks for the confirmation.

173534 2003-09-07 06:22:00 Is it possible to network your friend's computer with your own and copy the files over that way? Just a thought. tommy (2826)
173535 2003-09-07 06:49:00 a cd-rw disk most likly will not work. you will need to use a cdr and burn it so it is compatible with most os's (and make sure the session is closed and finalised). tweak'e (174)
173536 2003-09-07 09:11:00 Networking is not an option unfortunately (that would have been too easy!)

I was never confident that a CD-RW would work.

It is interesting in light (pun absolutely intended) of the comment about contrast that one of the CD-Rs that did work was a Melody disk from Warehouse Stationery that has a blue substrate rather than a silver/white one.

I'll do some more experiments, and keep you posted.
