173729 2003-09-08 01:33:00 Hi again.
How do I get ZA to stop blocking Netbios - security is set on low - ZA help states that you have to add networking to the "Trusted" folder - I don't seem to be able to find it.
The network consists of:
Acer Power 6100 running 98
HP 720a running ME
And a home altered (built) P2 running 98SE.
We can get the network started on boot up - and then ZA starts to block port 1027 and after two goes the network is no longer running.
Any suggestions would be greatly received.
Cheers
Shaun

173730 2003-09-08 01:52:00 Don't use ZA anymore. What version are you using? I imagine that if you list your computers IP addresses in the trusted sites you should be away, I vaguely remember its top right somewhere in the ZA window.

173731 2003-09-08 02:01:00 Cheers - sounds easy enough - one wee thing though - where do I find each pc's IP addresses? Nomad1 (3546)
173732 2003-09-08 02:04:00 ZoneAlarm Pro/Plus is designed to protect the individual computer it is installed on. This can include a PC workstation attached to a LAN.

By default, ZoneAlarm Plus/Pro adds detected networks to the UNtrusted Internet Zone. Therefore, computers on your Local Area Network will not be visible to each other, and you can not share files and printers.

NOTE - On larger networks, there may be multiple subnets, be sure to add ALL subnets necessary. Simply adding IP ranges may not always work, especially with multiple subnets. Therefore we recommend using actual subnet information whenever possible. Check with your Network Administrator or your Documentation for information specific to your configuration.

Click Firewall, then Zones. If the network adapter is listed, you can right-click on that name and change the setting to Trusted Zone.

If you have resources such as printers attached to your computer that others on the network need access to we recommend that you disable the ZoneAlarm Automatic Lock feature via the Lock Panel. When engaged, the Automatic Lock will block access to these resources from the Trusted Zone. Also, if the printer has an IP address assigned, be sure that IP is included in the Trusted Zone.

Note that using the Lock Feature will block all Local and Internet activity, and should not be used on a LAN in most cases. It can also cause loss of your Internet connection by blocking your ISP's DHCP server.

173733 2003-09-08 02:32:00 Go to control panel and click on Network & Dial Up Connections or right click My Network Places on your desktop and choose properties (yours may differ, I'm sitting in front of a win2k machine at mo). In either case right click Local Area Connection and choose Properties then highlight the line with Internet Protacol TCP/IP or the name of your adapter with TCP/IP after it and click on the Properties button. Here yours will differ but look for IP address, Subnet Mask (usually 225.225.225.0) and Default Gateway (which could be your router or the computers IP that has to be on to share the internet, if you do)

Pop those numbers into the appropriate place in ZA. If your using Obtain An IP Address Automatically (or/ie, DHCP) there may be somewhere in ZA to list that, otherwise I can't help.

173734 2003-09-08 02:38:00 opps the za site was a little out for the free ver.

>Click Firewall, then Zones. If the network adapter is listed, you can right-click on that name and change the setting to Trusted Zone.

go to where internet zone is listed and left click, then select trusted zone from the popup box.

if all esle fails use a different protocol for the network ;-)

173735 2003-09-08 03:22:00 Thanks for that - I did forget to mention that it is only the free version - and that my pc (HP 720a) is the "server", but there is no sharing of internet yet.
I will print this out and have a play when I get home.
Thanks for the tips

173736 2003-09-08 05:35:00 Grab Kerio. IMHO its better expecially on a network.

173737 2003-09-10 02:11:00 Oh ok - and that is free as well? Nomad1 (3546)
173738 2003-09-10 03:47:00 kerio is free and supports ICS however its not as easy to use as ZA especially for newbies. i actually wonder how many kerio/tiny users actually bother makeing rules for various programs ?? tweak'e (174)
