173507 2003-09-07 00:42:00 Hi folks,

I have an HP 510a which has a cd writer installed, and I'm looking to
install a cd-rom, in the extra bay provided.

I havn't attempted this before, and a freind suggests that, after making the writer the primary the cd-rom the secondary, and setting the writer to master, and the cd-rom to slave, the power and sound leads, do not have to be connected on the newly installed cd-rom.

Other information from a seperate scouce, suggests that these leads do have to be connected, so there would then be power and sound leads running from the motherboard, to both writer, and new cd-rom.

could someone please put me on the right track?

many thanks for your help.

173508 2003-09-07 01:14:00 eek..Don't get electrocuted (read WARNING!):O Robby, and unplug the main power cable to the wall before you go inside the PC case. Yes you do need to hook up the power supply to the cd/rom drive! You should find/see an extra spare power plug coming from your main ATX power supply inside to do this. The small thin/flat sound cable goes to your sound card(or MB/onboard sound). If you need pictures and stuff to help, do a google search for 'How install cd rom drive'. and goto the Cd Rom drives manufacturers website and download the help/pdf manual. electronhell (3374)
173509 2003-09-07 02:44:00 Yes you need the power lead plugged into the cd-rom or it wont power up. As for the sound lead, you'll have to decide which device,cd-rw or cdrom, you are going to use for music cds etc. mark.p (383)
