174136 2003-09-09 09:39:00 My dad has recently had W98 reinstalled on his computer and as they do, the people he took it to have installed a couple of un-needed programmes. The one he is having a problem with is AVG, I understand that this is an anti-virus programme. I used the add/remove programmes option in the 'control panel' to remove it as he has his own AV programme but he is now receiving the following messages on startup:

The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program. If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.
C:/progra~1/Grisoft/AVG6/AVGcore.vxd. Press any key to continue

It then repeats itself with the following file name:

C:/progra~1/Grisoft/AVG6/AVGfsh.vxd

So far it doesn't seem to have affected anything else but because he's using an older computer which is slowish to start anyway, this just makes the whole process even slower. I think it was a "free trial" demo that was installed.

Is there anyone that can help with removing these messages from startup, all help would be much appreciated.
Thanks :)

174137 2003-09-09 10:12:00 regcleaner comes in handy for removing old registry entries. otherwise a reinstall then uninstall may fix it. tweak'e (174)
174138 2003-09-09 10:14:00 just to add i hope you have or going to, install another antivirus to replace the avg. avg comes in demo pro ver or a totally free ver. tweak'e (174)
174139 2003-09-09 10:18:00 I had a similar problem with a program I removed. I reinstalled it and the problem went away. The program is still there, I just don't use it. You should be able to disable the startup scan and regular scans from within the program "options". The next step is to learn something about adjusting registry settings. I haven't got there yet. It's all gobbledegook to me so far. Maybe someone else out there has a bit of advice.

Good luck!

174140 2003-09-09 10:44:00 thanks for the replies, tweak'e where do I find regcleaner? And yes, the reason for uninstalling AVG is because we have another antivirus programme that dad is happy with using. If we need to reinstall AVG in order to fix the problem can we install it from the grisoft.com site? Vickie (1881)
