174006 2003-09-09 01:24:00 I bought my computer in 1997 and now its a k6 200mhz with 64 edo ram.Im running windows 98se and i've just slotted a usb1.1 pci that i got in the mail from my dad.i was wondering if my motherboard supports usb1.1 will it support usb 2.0?
Are there any software that can tests if its compatible?Im not sure the model number of my motherboard

174007 2003-09-09 02:41:00 If it is a version 1.1, then that is what it is, and there is no way to upgrade it to a version 2 unless changing the USB card for a version 2.
It has faster integrated circuits for a start.

174008 2003-09-09 02:53:00 while a USB2 card should work it proberly won't be much advantage over 1.1. it all depends on what you intend to use it for. tweak'e (174)
174009 2003-09-09 03:34:00 Im intending to use it to copy cds.I have a usb1.1 card.I want to get a usb2 but my dad says my mother board won't support.Hmm if it supports usb 1 then it should support usb 2 right? yingxuan (3330)
174010 2003-09-09 03:56:00 i think you will pissing into the wind trying to burn cd's with such an underpowered machine. most cdburners have a minimum cpu speed of around 300mhz+. the lack of ram is also going to be a problem.

it may be cheaper to go buy a better 2nd hand pc and an internal cd burner.

174011 2003-09-09 04:09:00 i just read your history, now it makes a bit more sence (this is why it pays to add as much info as possible)

i take you already have the USB1 card installed and a cdwriter connected to it. whats the problem with it and why do you think going to USB2 will fix it?

174012 2003-09-10 02:52:00 its just that usb1.1 is slow.my cd writer is 4x 4x 6x .its an external cd writer of course.I was wondering if i slot a pci usb 2.0 card in.and buy a new cd writer if my computer can handle the cd writer and i wonder if my usb2 will be recognise by my motherboard.
I just hate waiting 20 minutes just for one audio cd to be burn while my friends takes 1 minute.I am a unpatient person.lol]:)

174013 2003-09-10 03:03:00 I'm managing to burn CD-Rs with a P166 (64MB). Of course, that's Linux, not Windows. :D

4X speed is only 600 kB/s ... but it's always going to take at least 74min/4 to do a full one.

It might be cheaper to buy an internal drive (only $70 or so these days) which runs faster. That will always be better (and cheaper) than an external box and whatever interface (parallel, USB, serial, string :D). A bit more memory might help, but that probably wouldn't fit a new box. If you get a new box, you can move the new drive to it.

174014 2003-09-10 03:05:00 i wonder if i can run the latest speed of cd writer yingxuan (3330)
174015 2003-09-10 03:09:00 Youi can select the speed you run at. At some point, the CPU/disk speeds will not be able to feed the fastest drive. I think mine does 8X, whcih is the speed of the CD-RW drive. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't do 52X :D. Graham L (2)
