173879 2003-09-08 06:06:00 A plea to all Linux guru's how do I get my modem working? Having read several of the thread already here and tried the steps prescribed still no luck. Ran lspci modem is there, ran lsmod the required mod are there, ran the scanmodem utility and have very little idea what the text file is telling me. Could I get some help with this. The text file is included below.

The most recent update of scanmodem accessed at linmodems.technion.ac.il
should ALWAYS be used before requesting help from discuss@linmodem.org,
URLs to cogent advice are regularly entered and updated, and your problem may be solved therein.

An AC'97 or MC97 controller cooperates with the modem Subsystem

First accessing chipset provider and modem assembler information
for the modem SubSystem under the AC'97 or MC97 Controller.

=== Checking 8086 through chipset providers and modem assemblers ====

Vendor=8086 is Intel, Inc. producing HaM and 536ep host controller free (HCF) modems, the 537 soft modem
and AC'97 and MC97 controllers managing a varierty of non-Intel soft modem subSystems.
These subSystems will in have PCI_IDs assigned by the modem assembler, not Intel.
Download available drivers from: developer.intel.com
Also check at: linmodems.technion.ac.il
for early releases and perhaps Already compiled drivers for some Linux distributions

Some and perhaps all modems with:
PCI_ID 8086:1040
subSystem 8086:1000
have the supported Intel 536ep chipset.
Their drivers have a dependency on one other.
with result that these messages may be seen upon driver loading:
depmod****Unable to resolve symbol in 536ep.o
depmod****Unable to resolve symbol in 536epcore.o
but function is NOT affected.
Bur when the message is any longer, the drivers probably have not been properly compiled.
In which case carefully read COMPILING DRIVERS with ModemData.txt.2

173881 2003-09-08 22:26:00 Hi Been there already, tried both drivers for Red Hat 9, the default one and the smp one. Same result internet connection wizard unable to probe modem, the odd thing is that kppp can find and use the modem although the connection dies within 30 secs of connection.

Cheers Stuart

173882 2003-09-09 02:28:00 If kppp can find & use the modem then there must be a driver being used allready???
Are you sure the user name/password etc etc are correct, this may explain the dropped connection.

173883 2003-09-09 03:12:00 After such a failed connection, do "tail -20 /var/log/messages" in a terminal. That might tell you (us) what happened. "ls -l /dev/modem" too ... though that's probably Ok if kppp worked, even if briefly. ;-)

I don't like wizards. Somtimes it's Sauron, not Gandalf.

I guess the problem lies in the module that it can't locate, I couldn't find it either can we do without it?

Also upon boot it sometimes (3 of 5) says "failed to activate ppp0 with error 7 but once I am logged on I can activate ppp0 from the network console. What does this mean.

173885 2003-09-09 10:42:00 You could try running lsmod and see if you have these modules loaded (they are needed for communication)
ppp_deflate.o
zlib_inflate.o
zlib_deflate.o
bsd_comp.o
ppp_async.o
ppp_generic.o
slhc.o
In kppp /dev/ttySLTO is normally the device you would select.

173886 2003-09-10 01:31:00 only the ppp_generic.o and the slhc.o are there. Copy is below. Have I screwed up somewhere? How do I rectify this?

173887 2003-09-10 02:11:00 This is looking interesting. :D

Google, as ever, has answers. Have a look at /etc/conf.modules (or /etc/modules.conf ... only one should be there :D), then add these linesalias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate (I think I got that right ... if it doesn't work "ppp-compress-21" to googel will get you the links. ;-) )
Graham L (2)
173888 2003-09-10 04:45:00 now ppp_deflate.o
zlib_deflate.o
ppp_async.o

are in the list. On google a number of threads indicate that bsd_comp has been replace with ppp_deflate is this correct and if so that still leaves zlib_inflate.o

also a number of threads say to use alias ppp-compress-21 off to get rid of the message in the log, is this correct?

Cheers
