174053 2003-09-09 03:55:00 Sorry olldaddy76, more clarification required (or maybe I missed the point :( )

What exactly are you worried about? re "Utilities"?

Cheers, Babe.

174055 2003-09-09 04:22:00 If your computer works, LEAVE IT ALONE .

An occasional defrag, clearing out old files, etc, is all you should ever need to do .

Windows is an enormous heap of software (40 million or so lines of code) . The average industry standardc bug rate is 1 bug/30 lines . So there are "some" bugs there . The worst (most commonly occuring) ones have been weeded out .

Any other huge heap of code (produced by another set of programmers, without access to the Windows code) which is alleged to discover things set wrongly is [b[certain[/b] to wake up sleeping bugs in the Windows code .

Some one else said one such programme "found" over 500 things "wrong" with his Windows setup . :O We advised him to not let it "fix" things .

If you like "fixing" things, by all means use the things . If you want to work (or play) with a working computer, don't .

The appropriate phrase is: "Fix until broken" . :D

174056 2003-09-09 04:24:00 olldaddy76,

If you are on a (tight) budget then freeware tools downloaded from the internet such as Lavasoft's AdAware and Spybot's Search and destroy (both for clearing out that nefarious spyware/adware) are good.
For simple clearing of files on a regular basis you could use the inbuilt tools Start | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup and from the same area Disk Defragmentor will help

Norton SystemWorks 2002 and later (for WinXP) is ok if you wanted to spend that sort of money; inded there are dozens (maybe hundreds) of similar utilities available for download, freeware, shareware and paid versions from retail outlets.

If you want to keep within budget there is also this forum PressF1 and others like it to ask the questions and help you through the processes as required.

I believe you already have an AntiVirus (AVG is free and very good) solution and a Firewall (ZoneAlarm? or similar) on your system(s) so that part is covered.

Others may (will) have more ideas but I like to try and keep things simple from a business perspective (and keep the accountants happy)

Cheers, Babe.

174057 2003-09-09 04:25:00 i think what the "whiz kid" is trying to say is most auto cleaning/repairing program are not 100% perfect and can get it wrong causeing more problems than they are worth .

however most of them have backups and can restore it back if it causes problems . i recommend manually checking before deleteing . there are free ones but most good easy to use ones cost $$$ . they can help a lot but it all depends on how much you use the pc and if you can afford the $$$ .

nortons system works is good (cheaper than buying all the progs seperatly) tho there are others .

In my opinion, no you do not need one.

In my opinion that is enough, along with keeping your Windows Updates and anti-virus up to date, using a firewall and running Adaware and Spybot regularly. There are a couple of posts further down the page with links to information about firewalls and spyware that look interesting. Also remember to keep backups of all files that you wish to keep, including emails, documents, pictures/photos, etc.

174059 2003-09-09 05:48:00 I use pest patrol ,Fix-it and washandgo ,windowwasher ,regcleaner plus a few others.
there is always a danger of being over zealous but I like to keep my system optimised as much as possble defragged etc

Just make sure you do a restore point before any major cleanups and fiddling with the registry I learnt that the hard way many moons ago, these days I know when to draw the line in cleaning up things I also keep my C: drive imaged on another HDD so if there is a crisis I can do a restore in 10 or minutes
