1322790 2013-01-14 08:22:00 Hi has anyone come across a DVD that doesn't play on the computers but does play on the Xbox (we don't have a DVD deck anymore). The DVD ROM keeps flashing the LED light and it takes forever for Explorer to open up which I saw the folders but I cancelled it before I could see the file list. Someone did a google search and it said it's related the the DVD drive... and may need a new/different one. Nomad (952)

Anything Region Code related isn't protected by law here yet.

I have struck several DVDs recently that are very picky about what player they work in. Fixed by taking them back and getting other copies. I suspect some are very poorly made.

1322793 2013-01-14 10:47:00 Not specifically, I'm with PaulD on this one. Check the firmware of your drive, make sure it's the latest possible, especially if it's an old drive. Also, if the drive is old, does it play other DVDs (Such as ones you own?) alright? Chilling_Silence (9)
1322794 2013-01-14 10:51:00 The ones we own are alright, this is the first rental that we came across. My PC doesn't work, nor the Dell system downstairs. The Thinkpad laptop does though .. I'll check the FW. Nomad (952)
1322795 2013-01-14 20:09:00 My money is on a combination of scratched disk + old / picky DVD drives + dated firmware. Chilling_Silence (9)
1322796 2013-01-15 01:57:00 The FW is current. I upgraded to the same FW just in case. So with computers, dated DVD drives can be picky ... DVD movies are pretty standard thing :annoyed: Nomad (952)
1322797 2013-01-15 01:59:00 Hahaha if only that were true... Besides, over time and use, laser wears etc.. Chilling_Silence (9)
1322798 2013-01-15 02:53:00 Lasers do seem to lose power over time, and DVD's not reading always seem to be the first symptom. It's also worth cleaning the lens on your DVD drive occasionally as it can cause similar problems. But no personally, everything I've hired in the last few years has worked perfectly on the PC. Although I have upgraded so often my drives never really get old.

I doubt very much it's DRM related, but if it is you can get programs to sit in memory and remove such issues. The likes of DVD Genie or AnyDVD will remove region and DRM from a disk on the fly.

1322799 2013-01-15 05:32:00 We've had a couple of rentals play up on the Media Center, some wouldn't read where another would. Sometimes the same DVD played OK on another PC other times not. If that happens we either use the Blu-ray player or Errrrrrrrr use a "work Around".

Prefer to use the actual media center as there's more control on the screen sizing and altering of colour's etc from within the actual media players.

The problems are generally with well rented DVD's that have had a bit of usage, some people don't take much care when handling them. Guess that's the rental problems though.
