1322370 2013-01-11 00:16:00 Hi guys

I like getting emails, indeed my business depends on it.

But I get quite a few scam emails about my ASB, TSB, Kiwibank Westpac bank accounts and my IRD refunds etc.

I have always thought that if the ISP's were serious they could get together an remove any scam mailers at their source eg in Russian or China or Nigeria etc etc.

That way the whole world would be better off ?

What do you think ?

1322371 2013-01-11 00:32:00 That is what blacklists are for isnt it??

they will just find new ways around them all the time

1322373 2013-01-11 00:56:00 ISP's do block some spam emails but only from 100% illegitimate sources. If they went too far they would be at fault for blocking the customers legit emails that might accidentally get spam flagged. The Error Guy (14052)

They do.
Take a look at the spam list (that never makes it past them) sometime (you probably won't have the opportunity), but I have seen.....spam filters aren't perfect, otherwise there'd be too many legit mail being blocked, plus it has to constantly learn the new ones - but there's a massive amount that gets stopped.

1322375 2013-01-11 02:54:00 The Yahoo xtra webmail filter on my account puts much more mail straight into the spam folder than it actually delivers, and I don't think it's considered one of the better ones. Every now and again I skim through it to check for legit mails, I find a few.
Point is, they do block a great deal.

There was talk some time ago about adding micro charges to E-mail to stop scammers, something like a 1c or less charge per E-mail which would only effect mass mailers significantly. Trouble is a lot of spam comes from the e-mail of hacked computer accounts and the wrong people would end up getting charged (although it might actually alert some oblivious people to the fact they've been hacked)

1322376 2013-01-11 03:58:00 My ISP has a spam filter but, some get through. I maybe average about 2 a month. Don't know how many spam emails the filter stops that are addressed to me.

1322377 2013-01-11 04:01:00 Don't use ISP's mail, it makes it so much more painful if you want to change ISP. Gmail has fairly good spam filtering. Alex B (15479)
