Bit of a funny end to it all but the comment from Inspector Lynam was the part that I found baffling. "this accident demonstrates why there are graduated driver licences, because young people do not have the skills to react to situations that occur on the roads."

I don't think this has anything to do with a graduated system, I'd say it has a lot to do with kids who don't know how to drive. No matter what the licensing system for drivers is anyone who cant see over the steering wheel is probably going to have issues driving. No use trying to justify the system with this incident.

You could perhaps argue that if the kids had been taught how to drive at a younger age they wouldn't have had the incident in the first place. Regardless, stupid kids for taking the cars.

In before everyone else - yes my spelling crashed bad too, a perfect reason why we have a graduated education system, right?

:

Yes, an idiot comment there.
They couldn't drive. End of story.

1322181 2013-01-09 08:16:00 That had nothing to do with a graduated license. Lynam is an idiot for saying that. mikebartnz (21)
1322182 2013-01-09 18:04:00 Can you imagine how much mum and dad are spewing over this?

With it technically being theft by a family member, and unlicenced, underaged drivers, there's likely no insurance cover on this, with both cars damaged.

Ouch.

1322183 2013-01-09 20:07:00 How did the kids get hold of the car keys in the first place? Another case of bad/sloppy/ineffective parenting! tuiruru (12277)
1322184 2013-01-10 00:35:00 Yeah, insurance is a dead ball on that for the family unless the companies are feeling nice or their policy is damn good. I doubt it though. Insurers are feeling the economic pinch pretty bad, mostly thanks to recession and Christchurch.

I guess it's pretty easy to blame the parents but lets be honest. Would you really put your keys in a gun safe? Kids 12 + 14, I really would trust not to use a car myself. I would have expected them to be mature, perhaps at age 10-12 I'd be concerned and tell them not to piss around in cars (handbrake off, roll down drive type issue) but I would never expect them to drive. I know at that age I would never have even thought of starting the vehicle, let alone taken it out of the property. Since both kids took both cars outside I'd say its pretty safe to assume they have done this several times before too. Yeah you can blame parents but I think the real issue is the kids are immature. At that age they have the ability to know right from wrong and they know that what they did wasn't right for sure. Also at that age, they are smart enough to figure out where you hide/how to get the keys.

I think its a bit easy to blame the parents here, although it probably is a little bit their fault but I don't think there's much that can be done as far as parenting goes. You'll probably find the parents are pissed as hell, but also thankful that their kids are safe and also upset that they would have done something like this.

Most likely solution, no automatics :D

I am picking what these girls are and I dont think their parents would have an insured car. Probably no seatbelts no wof no rego either.
The same people you see broken down on the side of the motorway because they dont service their car, they just start it up and drive.
Its just a case of bad parenting but the wishy washy clowns will say its colonial oppression.
