I don't wish to hijack the thread, but this is worth a squiz ... the "legendary" Caspian Sea Monster (adding to and not detracting from, your theme) HERE (www.youtube.com) WIG (Wings In Ground effect)aircraft are fringe evolution craft, and have never really taken off (so to speak), but locally there is a Nelson based enthusiast who is getting recognition. Nelson Hoverwing (www.youtube.com) :D |

(Paul Holmes went for a ride in it - I think) Always wondered why more were not used for maritime search & rescue (and fire-fighting) now that Russia is more open with its technology and trying to sell it. |

| 1321596 | 2013-01-06 09:55:00 | I have read a lot about the "Caspian Sea monster" Most of the vids originated from around the mid 80's when experimentation was in full swing. I tried to find out more when I was in Russia and I believe they restarted research in 2010. Heard nothing since. I remember the Nelson Hoverwing and seeing it on the news a few years ago. Not sure what the latest is but I bet CAA would have soon put a stop to it. Yup, thanks tut. All good! | 1321597 | 2013-01-06 21:29:00 | I remember the Nelson Hoverwing and seeing it on the news a few years ago. Not sure what the latest is but I bet CAA would have soon put a stop to it. I think Lloyds classify a hoverwing as a surface vehicle rather than an aircraft. Hoverwings are designed to operate in ground effect and are unable to climb much more than 1.5 its wingspan. Because of the Lloyds classification, I don't think any civil aviation authority has gotten involved to any major extent. It would be interesting to learn why WIG seemed to have stalled (no pun). In theory, it should be all go. Because of its classification as a surface vehicle it doesn't have the amount of fail safe technology we find in conventional aircraft, and are therefore much cheaper to design, manufacture, and operate. E.g. the Caspian Sea Monster reportedly will carry 50% more payload than a comparative sized conventional aircraft, at 300 kts, and at about half the cost. One would think there might be a local application in the Hauraki Gulf centres, especially between Great Barrier or Waiheke, and Auckland. Not for a Caspian Sea Monster but for something of say 20 passenger size operating at a high frequency. :2cents: |
