1322667 2013-01-15 06:59:00 Almost. A rat with its moral values seriously deprecated. R2x1 (4628)
1322668 2013-01-15 11:29:00 My dad is like a Ninja. He had his work boots and squashed one of em before. The others he overheated in the hot water cupboard - it was their nest - and he just upped the heat on the dial a bit and they were gone in days.

Also they like peanut butter a lot, tried a few table spoons of peanut butter and a tiny amount of poison in an old marmite jar (a really big one), it was half full when we put it out the next morning it was all gone, and no rats seen since. But no bodies either so I guess there was like a huge family and stuff, so that they couldn't get enough to die but enough to get sick. I guess they know just to stay away or risk getting slightly sick.

1322669 2013-01-15 14:04:00 Get a humane trap then, take it out into the country and let it go.
:)
Sorry but what a stupid idea. I suppose you do the same with your unwanted kittens too.
What makes you think those in the country want your unwanted pets and pests.

1322670 2013-01-15 15:09:00 Trapping gets rid of them, for the interim. Eventually they come back.

Remove their reasons to stay and they'll not bother you. That's usually food and shelter. The better mouse trap brand will rid you of mice and small rats, use peanut butter as bait. They love it. Rather than a neck crushing finger snapping traditional trap the "better mouse trap" suffocates them. Not "humane" as possible but pretty good. If you have fully blown RATS, then you'll really have to bait. Get some Rentokill for rats from RD1 or farmlands, not sure about your local mitre10 or bunnings, they might have it but I'm not sure. Ask a sales clerk to help you choose. The teabag type ones have been good for our sheds etc, and the ring ones (which you tie with wire) are also good. I think you may be able to to get the grain type ones for rats, Its usually for mice.

Mice aren't too bad provided they don't cause much damage or get into food, our house is 160 years old so there are plenty of non destructive living quarters, newer houses mean they often cause damage making nests so it's good to keep them to a minimum. Rats on the other hand are dangerous, in addition to attacking children and adults they are much worse at spreading disease and cause a lot of damage, esp to cabling. Seen a few fires caused by rats. If you have rats it really is best to wage an all out war on them, mice it's ok just to control with bait and maybe a few traps in the kitchen areas to prevent them getting into food etc.

Also, make sure you put traps in easy to remember and clear places! Nothing worse than finding a maggoty corpse under a couch (yuk!) or as I once found, a twisted skeleton in the pump shed.
