1321906 2013-01-09 18:35:00 Having just recently being diagnosed as diabetic, I find it a scary thought what can possibly happen. I get sleepy quite suddenly sometimes and just want to shut my eyes. This can be a problem when I am driving somewhere, so I always carry some jelly beans and a water bottle in the car. So far I have been perfectly fine, but I like to think that someone would offer to help if they found me in a heap on the ground somewhere. Heaven forbid!

It's only if you are on insulin. Pills, diet control, not so much of a worry.
Also, husband has been type 1 for 43 years.......hypoglycemic unawareness is something that takes a long, long time to happen.

He used to have symptoms.

Anyway the thing is check the levels often, and before you drive.

Type 2 is what you get in your older years......type 1 is a different cause, and occurs when young, 25 yrs or younger...even little kids.

No.

Type 1 diabetes usually begins in childhood or adolescence, a misfiring autoimmune response within the body starts destroying the pancreatic cells that create insulin, the hormone that removes glucose from the blood. In short, without insulin, you die.

Type 2 diabetes, Sometimes called slow-onset diabetes, Type 2 generally appears over the course of several years. Here the body produces insulin, but cells don’t respond to it correctly. The first treatment for Type 2 diabetes is almost always a change in diet, exercise habits, and weight loss. Type 2 diabetes is said to affect the sedentary, obese, and elderly but it is often an unknown cause.

Nothing. Ring the ambulance.

A normal diabetic low on sugar though? If they are conscious and able still, get them to drink any soft drink. The stuff has gallons of sugar in it, a small 300ml is fine, that will send it the other way.
But if they are not responding properly, forget it, you can drown them.

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully I will never have to put it into action but at least I will know what to do.

You wouldn't need the entire bottle....a 1/4 would be enough, and wait a bit.
It's really only insulin people, once you take the stuff, you then have to keep up with it, so to speak.

1321913 2013-01-12 00:59:00 I have a cuppa with sugar, when I get down in the 3's.

A banana is good too.
