1346398 2013-06-19 23:42:00 Hi guys.
Just purchased a Realtek RTL 8187 N wifi, usb thingee.
The setup disk didn't work so I used a driver update program, to get it going.
Add said USB 150mbps Wifi Wireless Adapter, right clicking on icon says 72 mbps.
I have the latest Telecom modem and it says it set up for Interface Type:802.11b/g/n.
Any ideas how I can, speed it up?
:banana

1346399 2013-06-20 01:05:00 Move it closer to the router. :D

You'll never get that speed in real life anyway so I wouldn't bother trying to get it any faster.
If it's just for internet access that speed is plenty faster than your internet connection so having a faster wireless link to the router won't make any difference.
You would notice a difference though if you are transferring data to another machine on your local network.

Thanks, for that.

I have an older laptop with a G wifi and the transfer speed, between that and the desktop, is quite slow.

Oh well, thought I ask.

When/if we get the fibre thats going in, hopefully need faster speeds, no?

1346401 2013-06-20 02:04:00 My PC is 4yr old, fine for the odd photo edit, surf the web and what have I ... It's got a G Wireless card (54Mbps) it tends to hover around 20-25Mbps. Upgrading these wireless equipment can be expensive and you still are not going to get the efficiency.

I've just put a $65 8 port network switch 1000Mbps speed (Gigabit) and some cables around. I did 3 rooms and ye to link the internet router downstairs (we have fiber 30Mbps). Didn't get the 100Mbps due to my needs and the cost. If it was the same cost for the same data why wouldn't I  For Internet I don't think it will be much diff that I would notice. But copying single large files from one computer to the next. I tried a 500MB video and got it in 5 seconds

I think I spent $200 in cable parts and wall sockets not incl the switch but a 4 port could be had for $40. If you don't do wall plates but just the plugs even cheaper, 80c instead of maybe $8 but if you get the so called NZ standard they use PDL equipment, a single wall plate unit can cost $35. $40 buys you a 50m roll of cable.

Fiber 100Mbps - yep Ethernet way to go. I haven't tried the newest flash wireless equipment, one of the wireless N goes at 300Mbps right, so a 33% efficiency might get you 100Mbps in real speed  I read there are some wireless equipment capable of doing 600Mbps or even 900 or 1000 but not sure if they have reached the consumer level yet.

I wouldn't trust that. Get the latest drivers from Realtek: www.realtek.com.tw

Note there are different versions of the chip so make sure you get the right one

1346403 2013-06-20 02:27:00 Worth a mention is:
If one computer is on wired to the router and the other is wireless this is sig faster than if both computers are on wireless. Local transferring of files that is....

Yes I looked there, to start with.

It lists L, B and SE, mines just says RTL 8187.

So didn't know what to download.;)

Who made the adapter? If you check their website it might tell you. Or you could just look at what is printed on the chip itself. Of course for a USB one that might be hard to do...

Or just try all three.. Windows will probably throw a fit at the two that aren't correct anyway.

Who made the adapter? Thats a very good question. I bought it off Trade Me, pain about $8 I think and doesn't have any brand names on it.
Chance you take, with Trade Me.
Re: trying all three, I had some much trouble getting the sodden thing to work, thinking best leave well enough alone.
I not excatly on good terms, with either computer..
