I am not a fan of Benjamin Netanyahu and probably never will be but compared to our music teacher he certainly got this right .

Thought you might find this interesting, considering how many times we have been locked down……

Israel herd immunity

Israel has once again shown countries how clever leaders think in the 2nd and 3rd order (thinking beyond the obvious) .

Last week Israel became the first country to inoculate its entire adult population over age 18 . Yesterday, all schools and colleges were opened and mask requirements were removed all across the country (barring a few congested public places) .

Here's how this remarkable country did it .

Israel's leaders are all well educated and many of them have advanced degrees in science and medicine . Their PM graduated at the top of his class at MIT, and started (but didn't finish) a PhD at Harvard .

They realised at the onset of the pandemic last year that the only way to beat a virus was through herd immunity, and that vaccination was key to expediting this process . They immediately zeroed in the two companies that were ahead of the pack in vaccine development--Pfizer and Moderna . The Israeli PM immediately developed a personal friendship with the CEOs of these companies (using his Harvard and MIT connections) .

As soon as Pfizer announced successful Phase 3 trials Israel made a deal with Pfizer to pick up their first 8 million doses for twice the price ($30 per dose) of what Pfizer was eventually aiming to sell the vaccine . Israel also agreed to provide Pfizer with data on the efficacy of the vaccine on its population . By November 2020, Israel had already acquired the vaccines it required to immunize its people .

The Israeli PM was asked two weeks ago why they agreed to pay $15 per dose extra, and his response was classic 2nd order thinking . He said that, just in pure economic numbers, the total amount they overpaid was a miniscule fraction of what it costs to lockdown the country . This is not counting the extra medical costs of Covid and the incalculable price of losing a loved one . The economic loss from just three days of lockdown was more than the overpayment for all the vaccines they bought .

This is how smart people think . And the difference between Music Teacher Trudeau and an MIT graduate . :)

1477229 2021-05-17 01:53:00 . . . but then rockets are way cheaper .

Yes, getting shot for throwing rocks .
when your population has no hope in sight & nothing left to loose . . . . . .
Perhaps a bit like Poland under Nazi control, who criticized the several attempted Warsaw uprisings ?

This is what happens when you "back the wrong horse" . ie one side is Pro US, one side is anti US . Guess which side is prevailing .

1477231 2021-05-17 03:30:00 This issue is really hard to talk about. It is a systemic problem that has been going on for a long time. DrNum (17574)
1477232 2021-05-17 05:20:00 Philistines'/ Palestinians' had 2000 years to really saturate the whole of that area with population growth, which would have made it harder for Israel to boot them out, in 1948.

Don't for one minute think I back the Jews', but they do do their homework and try to fight those who fire the rockets, not just fire and hope.

Still reckon they should have put the money into vaccines, not Iran's pocket for rockets.

1477233 2021-05-17 05:55:00 Interesting take on the whole mess: www.vox.com

A lot of misery is down to the extremists: Hamas on the one side, & the far-right Jews that help Netanyahu stay in power - not sure that he would be as bad if it wasn't for his desire to stay PM (& maybe avoid pending corruption cases because of it?)

Its a conflict over land. Palestinians were forced out of their homes, forced off their land.
Israeli'es kept land they conquered in the wars .
Would moderate Israelies be moderate if they had nowhere to live ?

Its a lesson that can be applied to NZ.
Steal land off another race/people , refuse to give it back & give litte compensation (a few blankets) , then wait while resentment turns to
into conflict . Just a matter of time before some Maori get radicalized into violence (perhaps thats allready happening)

1477235 2021-05-18 06:30:00 Yes it's ongoing:

1st the Israelites and whoever they chased out .

2nd the Assyrians'/Germans took the 10 Israelites' tribes away to the north .

3rd the Romans chased the Jewish/Levi nation out .

4th Crusaders' tried to drive out the Arabs several times .

5th WW! swept through the land .

Also: The Arabs then chased the Jews all the way across North Africa into Spain, during the middle ages .

Then the Roman Catholics chased them well into France .

Whew wtf could they do after Hitler gassed them, "we want to go back home" I would have thought! .

ps . don't get me started on NZ and it's first settlers' .

1477236 2021-05-18 07:06:00 Problem is the drugs are still in the testing phase and have not had any long term trials to see if they are really as safe as the drug companies say they are.

I'm in two minds about it all. On the one hand I don't want to join the guinea pig trials, but on the other I have a friend who has a son age 11 who would most likely die if he caught it due to not having a proper functioning liver.
