I agree with you that if there was an asbestos problem then something needs to be done. But the Hospital has been closed since 1998 and placing a security Guard on duty for the last four years at the cost of $1.24M isn’t going to fix the problem. Then to put the icing on the cake they say the present situation may last another 15 years. I would have thought that at least one of our Politicians would have demanded to know just what exactly is the situation. For me the situation has got Rort written all over it. 10877 |

Probably didn't want to allocate any of the budget to asbestos removal and in the end spent more just stuffing around while trying to decide what to do. A building in my area recently had wall and roof asbestos sheets removed and replaced with coloursteel in a matter of weeks (but privately funded). I've seen it many times. Council/Gov puts things off "because it costs too much" but due to neglect the problem gets worse and ends up costing more than it would have if they'd dealt with the problem when it was much smaller. |

All large corps and govt depts are wasteful and inefficient. I've worked at a few. The worst was WDHB. Even with husband in hospital, once he stopped eating, noted to not bring meals...but yet they still came. There was a pileup at one point, what a waste. Every thing they do involves a consult with others and more bits of paper and that was low priority so didn't happen. All it really needed was to tell the kitchen people. |

Thats where the rort is. I bet they ACTUALLY get around $40k salary/wage , or less . Anyway. $1.24M over 4 years is nothing (unfortunately). Its a drop in the bucket for govt departments. What till you see the cleanup bill for that site :groan: And because the land was stolen off local maori, expect even more money to flow . |

They get ripped off , because no one cares when spending other peoples money. If it was a private company that owned that site, I bet the security guard costs would be considerably less. Guy I used to know, where he worked they literally just made up a number when charging Councils or Govt depts , because no one cared or negotiated a better deal. as I said, $1.25M over a few years is literally nothing for govt depts & councils . Ak spend over $1M to rebuild a walkway bridge that literally wasnt needed , it went no where that people could go . |
